Obviously you have seen the world outside of scranton and I for one am envious of you.....Its hard for us rednecks to get of our homes nevermind out of the state like you did, wow your perspective of the area must be grand since you know you are "coming in from a different state" and all. Thats so cool, please tell us what the world outside of our little valley is like.....

Do they have those electric cars? Did you ever see anyone from a different state while you were in a different state? How cool. I bet you even saw people with those new cell phone things.

Hell I even saw one of those SUV things with license plates from New York when I was Agway buying feed for the animals....They were even talkin with one of them accents you hear on the TV. Cool.

Demographics-wise minorities tend to flock to areas of their own "kind," if you will, because it helps them to have a strong support network to more easily assimilate into a foreign culture like ours. Hazleton and South Scranton will continue to become hotbeds for Hispanics because this network is now in place. Hazleton even has a separate Spanish newspaper, El Mensajero, that I read on occasion to try to brush up a bit on my own Spanish. South Scranton has a growing number of Latino-owned businesses, and the latest squabble up there are the Caucasian natives rebelling against plans to open up a Latino-oriented dance club (or something along those lines).

Wilkes-Barre is home to a very vocal NAACP chapter whose president, Ron Felton, is an old friend of ours. Wilkes-Barre has the highest local concentration of African-Americans (perhaps save for Williamsport) probably because they know they have a similar "strength in numbers" support network in the Diamond City as opposed to here in Pittston, for example, where people crane their necks to look at someone who isn't white, as if to say "Wow! I never saw one of them before!" I have a number of African-American friends, so naturally I get upset when people I know hear of a crime being reported and say "probably another black."

As far as the LGBT community is concerned, I must say it is surprisingly spread out all across our region instead of only being densely-concentrated in one specific area. All of my exes have been from the rural Poconos. If and when the Lower Hill Section gentrifies itself with the addition of the medical college, the future improvements downtown, and the continued expansion of the U of S, that will probably become our region's "gayborhood" since I already know of quite a few Lower Hill LGBT residents and couples who enjoy the same things I do---the historic architecture, proximity to downtown, tree lawns, and convenience to amenities. I know locals try to pretend the LGBT community "doesn't exist," but our numbers are much larger than you'd think---I'd estimate probably 5%-8% of the region.

Even non-minority transplants into our region have their own "clusters"---The Abingtons, Back Mountain, Mountain Top, and North Pocono (with Greater Pittston now being added to that list as well judging by all of the out-of-state plates on our streets). People generally just feel more comfortable with those who are similar to themselves, hence the homogenized neighborhoods.

Scranton is leaps and bounds ahead of Wilkes-Barre in the liveable neighborhoods department. Plus, Scranton also has a lot of nice architecture, while Wilkes-Barre's housing is more white aluminum sided coal-miner houses with barn-shaped roofs crammed together.

What Makes Wilkes-Barre Un-liveable.. just curious.

when i moved here there really werent too many things seperating wilkes barre and scranton other then wilkes barre was closer to my job (plains, pa).. what makes scranton more "liveable" then Wilkes Barre... or just what makes wilkes barre "un-liveable"

Unfortunately, cities like Jersey City, Newark, and Hoboken are dumping their trash here in NEPA...and I'm not talking about trash that comes from garbage trucks.

Crime, run down neighborhoods, more out-of-town low lifes. Generally unappealing architecture. Scranton also has better schools. Scranton has run-down neighborhoods and some low-lifes too, but there are still many nice parts of town...

i know in wilkes barre there is a good neighborhood by the river near gordon ave park....

I know Plains is a area with nice neighborhoods, miners mill, parsons, are all nice neighborhoods.although not part of wilkes-barre city-- they are the wilkes barre area .. not to mention i think wilkes barre townships georgetown section isnt too shabby. Kingston is beautiful. Only places that i've heard are bad are "south wilkes barre"; which IMHO isn't all as bad as its cracked up to be; the Sherman Hills Apts - which truly look like S***. and thats really about it. The architecure may not be the most appealing, but to me doesnt make the area less liveable.

Oh I don't think the entire W-B area is bad....Kingston and Forty Fort are very nice towns, I just wouldn't want to live in W-B city. Plains and W-B Twp. are OK too. Although Edwardsville may be as bad or worse than any section of W-B.

i cant speak much to edwardsville -- haven't ventured too far off of Rt11 and Northampton over there.

i currently reside in W-B city and its not so bad. My house is really old.. the streets are kind of tight.. but i'm completely cool with parking in the alley behind my house. besides.. i can walk to a bus stop to take me to my job if i dont feel like driving my 50cc scooter or my car, and i can walk to CJ's Pizza for a stromboli & a beer.

again, I've been to scranton.. no compalints really.. i actually have been to the bar on stafford & maple quite a bit...

My w-b company is going to start an indoor soccer team to play at the Riverfront sports complex, so i'm sure i'll get to know the city better.
