Public safety is really the responsibilty of everyone. A police force will not be effective unless they are aided by the community. People need to report suspicious activity and take an active role, unless Scranton started to hire psychics and I missed the Times article.

Of course anyone will report suspicious activity.....who wouldn't?? But the problem is that the police are so short staffed that they can't respond in a timely manner. Buy a scanner, your eyes will be opened to how stretched thin our police department is. They are constantly having to pull cops from one part of town to go to another part of town because there is an insufficient number of officers on duty....constantly leaving one part of town or another with NO police protection. But Doherty is busy giving raises to his bloated administration and building bridges to nowhere at his Nay Aug fantasyland. The police do not even have adequate cars.....they're mostly old and banged up and sound like lawnmowers.....yet he and his administration are all driving gas-guzzling SUV's.

Our police officers have actually been purchasing their OWN cruisers because the city's fleet is falling apart....Imagine that...having to purchase your own cruiser just so the engine doesn't fall out while your driving...WHICH DID ACTUALLY HAPPEN.

They didn't HAVE to, they WANTED to. There's a difference.

They WANTED to only because the option was driving an unsafe unreliable old beater.

Not necessarily. Some just wanted to have their own car, one that other officers would not be using. This way, as long as they kept the car clean and drove in a responsible manner, the car would be in good condition. Usually not the case with fleet vehicles, BTW. Others saw it as a savings, since the city would be paying for the fuel to drive to and from work. I think their by-in was 8 grand, not bad when you think of how high gas prices have been. This would also allow an officer to not have to own a second car, assuming there was another vehicle in the household, and not incur the cost of a car payment, maintenance, etc on another vehicle. If I recall it was the union that suggested this, not the city.

Correct they did but they did it because the maintenance on the aging fleet was a joke. Don't you remember when the engine dropped out the car on Lackawanna ave a few years back when the DPW was on Providence rd.

These guys are purchasing the cars because they know that they will have a reliable car that they CAN DEPEND ON when the times comes. Again a CLEAR example of how the neglect of our public safety is an issue but yet you turn it around on the union....Boy you have been taught well.

That's why it is so important to have a spare engine in your trunk.
