The mischief has started!!
Just an FYI everyone...
Last night, my husband went to get in our car to pick up our daughter from the football game.
As he was pulling out of the driveway, he noticed that someone threw a BIG, HEAVY pumpkin and took out our new mailbox (we just put it up last week!), along with damaging our neighbors.
We didn't see or hear anything (my husband was downstairs doing some remodeling work; we think his noise drowned out the outside noise), but decided to call the police anyway.
Even though I know we won't catch who did it, I wanted the police to know that the mischief has started, at least here in Mt. Cobb! I also told him a political sign was taken from our yard about two weeks ago. The officer said he'd look into it, depending upon what sign was there!! LOL!
We're are so getting a outdoor motion detector light TODAY...
Man, I'm so ticked off. Damaging property is not a way to have fun...

I had a mailbox knocked down a few months ago myself. My mail box is on the other side of the road from my house since the mail carrier only goes up one way, and I kept trying to think of possible accidents that could've caused it, but I am pretty sure it was vandalism. It is very frustrating indeed. To make it worse, I hadn't picked up my mail in about a week, so I had to crawl through this ditch to pick up all the mail, and who knows what blew away in the wind.

I can't believe someone would get their jollies from destroying other people's property that they worked hard for. It's really a sad state of affairs when something like this happens.

Oh well, don't ya' all move to my street. We are all set back........the mailboxes are out of sight to many. Its a straight road, and that makes for " mailbox destroying" It happens in spurts, but when it does it is not just one or two........but the entire street.
People are trying now to put a metal bracing on each side. ( not great looking)
Lucky for me, I am the turning spot for the Postman..........so mine is set in. It hasn't gotten hit yet. ( Oh, Summering is knocking on wood just now)
Around here it is not just a Halloween prank.
Our neighbors mailbox with wooden stand was up around the corner in a gully.........
They loose a couple a year.
No one ever finds the culprits.........long gone ,and probably home sleeping, after a long party night.

When I moved here I put up my mailbox (which is 1 of 3 together with the house next to me's & across the street's but all are on my property).
The 1st Halloween someone knocked them down. I put them back up.
The 1st hurricane took them down. I put them back up.
The 2nd hurricane took them down. I put them back up.
The new neighbor across the street backed into them & knocked them down with a box truck moving in. I put them back up.
The 3rd hurricane knocked them down. I put them back up.
That same neighbor just knocked them down with ANOTHER box truck moving out. I put them back up.
Now I'm going to Home Depot next week to get concrete & cinder blocks & build the MOTHER of all mailbox holders that'll thumb it's nose at hurricanes, neighbors, box trucks AND Halloween mischief!!!

sounds like you need to get some 3 inch steel pipe, bury the bottom of it a good 2-3 feet below grade. then fill the pipe wit cement. this will create a fairly indestructible pole.
then you need to find yourself a box made out of 1/4" steel. it would survive a grenade
at my parents house the box would get nailed by plows a few times a winter. one of my neighbors came up with the idea of filling a bucket with cement and putting the pole in there. then if it got hit it would just fall over.

LOL!! I thought of the bucket idea...it's just that in 120-135mph winds of a hurricane like the ones we got, it would go flying down the street & become a projectile!!
I've already got a 2'x2' concrete "pad" in place with rebar. The problem is that everything above the "pad" is wood, so that's gonna change to block/rebar/concrete!!
I'm just hoping my new "construction" doesn't turn out looking like Lucy & Ricky's brick BBQ (if you remember that...)

After getting a few pumpkins kicked in, I came up with the idea of a cast iron jack o lantern that is bolted down to a pad. I think I would end up with a lawsuit when a punk breaks his foot kicking it. !

If you do the pipe thing make sure it goes through the mailbox. When they hit it with a bat they may destroy the mailbox but they are going to get a big surprise especially if they are driving in a car.
