I've now been drained. There's only so much of hearing the "I hate my life, and it's all the area's/government's fault---most certainly NOT my own fault" banter you can take. Just tonight I just had to grin and bear it while a customer whom I was assisting in a major purchase proceeded to make some very nasty comments about Hispanics when he saw that most of the signage in our store is bilingual. I would have loved to have taken a social justice stand there along the lines of "My boyfriend is Hispanic" (just to REALLY ruffle this guy's feathers), but alas if I were to lose that sale in front of my manager simply trying to do the right thing I'd probably be out on the street right now in one of the worst job markets in a number of years. In similar fashion my former manager and I were assisting a contractor who made some anti-gay slurs, and my manager joined in with more anti-gay jokes and slurs of his own as if I were invisible. Hell, I would have loved to have contacted CNN, contacted my family's attorney, and filed one hell of a lawsuit for my employer creating and tolerating such a hostile work environment, but I just kept thinking to myself "If I get this guy fired and this other guy to lose customers there will still be 1,000 others to take their place."

I'm tired of this. I encounter racism, prejudice, and homophobia here in the Wyoming Valley on a DAILY basis. People think that their comments are well-tolerated by others when in fact it pierces my brain to have to be EXPECTED to serve people like that. I just can't take doing this: day-in and day-out any longer dealing with these low-lives anymore. I have friends from all sorts of different cultural, racial, and economic backgrounds, and I value each friendship the same. It's a shame that so few others in our area can act in similar fashion.
Ah, My dear SWBarre...........You have to just go with the flow in this lifetime. So many just learn to not care what anyone says or thinks........
Turn away and smile.......the smile will usually do wonders.Big one

I have a son in law whos family came from Spain. He is the best, sweetest, wonderful guy, ever. I would not change a thing about him.....nothing. I adore him with all my heart. He gets extra checks at the airport due to his name, he gets extra police stops........and if they only knew what a blessing he is to us. I hinted to the lady at the check in counter at the airport, and I knew she read my eyes.........

OkDorothy .........I was wondering how your visit to NEPA went, thanks!

JG........Oh heck, bring the feather boas....be cool
