How far off the beaten path? Possibly moving to The Pocono's
I want to thank everyone for all their advice to my last post. My wife and I recently visited PA, we were considering the YORK area or possibly closer to Philly (Montgomery or Chester County.) We want to rent before we commit and buy and are looking in the $1400/month range. York had more for the money but not much in the way of availability, Montgomery and Chester did, but not in the price range we wanted. We were every realtor’s nightmare. So now we are set to move within the next 2 months (job relo) and no place to live.
My job allows for me to call any city home as long as it’s within PA, so a job is not an issue. We have visited the POCONOS and we liked the communities however the mountain driving concerns my wife. We are rethinking the possibility of the POCONOS (we will consider anywhere in NE PA)
I want to be sure we spend our time wisely on our next visit. Please help we need to find a home.
We are looking for a SAFE, lake community with amenities. We are slightly concerned about distance to local necessities once outside the community like grocery stores, restaurants, dry cleaning, hospitals, entertainment, etc… I also need reliable high-speed internet access for work. So if everyone can share some details about their favorite community in the Pocono’s and its immediate surroundings we would greatly appreciate it.
We have researched the Milford area, Lords valley (hemlock farms), Honesdale area, Masthope, Tobyhanna and Saw Creek. We know there are many more… (So feel free to share.) We want to make the most of our next trip, and thanks ahead of time.

JKL... check out the numerous threads here on The Hideout in Lake Ariel, Pa. Here is a link to the web-site for our community. I have lived here for 15 years, if you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer.

If I were you, I'd stay closer to the city and visit the Poconos on the weekends. Although, it's beautiful there, things are kind of far out for day to day living. When I lived there, for 28 years, it always seemed like everything you had to do took the entire day. (Going to the doctor, grocery shopping) Now, if you go into parts of Scranton or surrounding areas, things will be closer. The places you mentioned though are rural. Hope this helps.

I will share what I do know about the Pocono's. "Stay out of there"! It's a mess! Over the years of working up there. I seen the place change from a nice frindly and warm place to have a family to an all out war zone!!
Nothing againest anyone from outside of PA, but in the last 2 or 3 years I seen more and more people from NY, move into place's such as PCP, pocono farm's, and other gated community's. Here's were the problem come's into play! They move here because it's alot cheaper to live, but still travle back to the city to work everyday. Whats wrong with that?? When they go to work they leave their kids behind, because the busses pick there little trouble makers up right inside the community and drop them right back off there at the end of school. Mom and dad are still in the city working and dont get home to late at night. No one around to tell the little kids breaking into your house and sealing your guns and boze isnt a nice thing to do! And dont forget about the 2 gangs that moved in from the city. You dont have to take my word for it move anywhere around there and you will soon find out the hard way.
I'm not going to say what kind of work I did around them lovely parts but let's just say It was a hands on job. And dealing with it everyday...... Well.... Not anymore!!
Good luck in finding your home away from home.
Ps. The HideOut is not much better!!

Hideout link... Hideout POA - Home
John from Scranton....You can't possibly compare PCP to The Hideout. They are nowhere near each other. All the things that you rant about are definitely NOT happening in The Hideout. What makes you an expert on The Hideout, may I ask? I have lived here for 15 years. As far as kids walking to and from the bus while their parents go work in NY...not happening here either. The large majority of kids are not within walking distance of the bus.
War Zone?
Break ins?
Gun and booze thefts?
Gangs?
When speaking of The Hideout...please back just one of these things up with a fact.
If you can't then I suggest you keep false acusations to yourself to good people looking for advice on these forums.

2 years ago someone set a State troopers house on fire, last year drug bust in the hideout, hideout had to install camers at the main loge, people getting drunk in the in house bar, then driving on the streets of the hideout almost took out 2 kids. Should I go on??? Im not saying its as bad or close to PCP, but like any gated community, its starting to take a turn. WLE, is the only some what good one left. And its not gated go figer....

"What makes you an expert on The Hideout, may I ask?" Not saying I am. But did work there part time for 2 years before moving forward with my goals in life. So I did lets say handle alot of calls to know that its not as good as some may think.

John I also live in the Hideout- you obviously have no idea what you are talking about - Oh yes - we have an unruly bunch of deer standing in the road in the morning on the way to the busstop that refuse to move. And a few weeks ago we did have several breakins, but they were apprehended - guess what - they were local kids from lake ariel (born and raised - may have never been to New York - and their parents don't work anywhere). So give us some facts before you trash a wonderful place to live.
