I know that, but the point was that it was pumped up in the times as the new Corp HQ and another company coming to the downtown and nothing has happened just like so many of the other supposed things that are happening in the downtown...The SU is the perfect example......That was to be filled by what May?

FYI Merrill Lynch IS on its way. A few of my friends here at King's were interviewed by them for their new Scranton office.

Well then Merrill Lynch ought to be ashamed of themselves for being the latest company to come to our campus and give our students so much false hope. King's brags about its 99% placement rate, but with the economy the way it is I think the Class of 2009 will have a MUCH lower placement rate in their fields of choice (unless they relocate to areas where they don't wish to live).

Hi,
I like smart, progressive people too but honestly there isn't much of an Ithaca-like vibe around here that I've seen.
There's no big city in NEPA, so you're covered on that no matter where you go, but what else do you want in your immediate environs? Do you want a walkable neighborhood or are you happy driving for the amenities you mention? Town or suburban vibe? What kind of house, old/new, big/small? How big a yard/garden do you want?
This might help people steer you more.

401k? No way, I have a nice comfortable pension coming when I retire.

thats what those gm employees and soooooooo many other companies thought too. unless it was a federal pension or gov't backed at this point i wouldnt stop doing my own retirement savings. at any point your pension can be dust.... more and more local municipalities may declare bankruptsy to get out of all these legacy benefits.. its already happening in areas around the country. last year companies of the s&p 500 meaning 500 of the largest companies in america were overfunded, this year they are under funded by hundreds of billions and are asking congress for some pension relief in modifying existing pensions.
just a word to the wise, never count on someone else funding your retirement

The Wayne, Lackawanna, Luzurne Counties offer everything you need. We have multiple Colleges and Universities in this area and we are home to the Highlights magazine and publishing company in Honesdale. Just some ideas to consider. Good luck with your search

Wow...I just posted an entire reply before registering, and after registering my entire reply disappeared. What's up with that?We live in a small burg called Lithia Valley (behind Factoryville) which is just 17 miles from Scranton and 30 miles from most other areas (Wilkes-Barre/Pittston, etc.). It is a quiet, rural area that is very lovely. There have been many good suggestions on this thread.I'm happy to see folks who love the quality of life of Northeastern PA. We've lived in alot of places and chose to settle in this area. Is there anything the Chamber can do about the winter though?Hanna

My family is outside Binghamton, his is outside Philly, so NEPA seems like a nice choice for us to be fairly close to both families. Right now we're in Ithaca, about one hour from my fam and four from his.
We adore Ithaca, but we both went to college here and while we have respectable jobs, we know our options are somewhat limited--the job market in Ithaca has a reputation for being tight. Lots of educated people and not enough jobs to go around. Plus, having lived here for basically eight years and becoming post-college townies while our friends moved on has us feeling like it's time for us to explore our options.
He wants to continue working at a college or university, and ideally I'd like to work in publishing, but am open to other writing, editing, or communication opportunities. Neither of us wants more than a twenty-minute commute.

So, I hope that's enough of a snapshot of us to get some suggestions started. I'm looking forward to seeing what you all think! Thank you for your time.

You kind of sound a little snooty to me, "smart, progressive people", you're going to get a mix no matter where you live. I guess you have to take your chance no matter where you move to.
