Thumbs up 2008 Election: How Luzerne County Voted

I thought some of you would be interested in this, so I have our copy of the Times-Leader sitting here on the desk next to me, and I will use their maps and tables to compile a few lists for you all. The percentages listed aren't indicative of the ENTIRE population eligible to vote but rather as a percentage of those who voted for one major party candidate over another. (For example, if 1,000 people in XYZ Town voted with 600 voting for Sen. Obama and 400 voting for Sen. McCain, then that town voted 60% for Sen. Obama and 40% for Sen. McCain. That's how these percentages are to be read).

You're awesome Paul...thanks for doing this. I see that my town of Dallas was 46.5% for Obama...you never would have known it judging by how many McCain signs there were on people's lawns all over town!

I'm actually quite surprised to find that my own Greater Pittston area is the most Democratic and/or liberal part of the county. I would have assumed Wilkes-Barre or Nanticoke would have had the most support for Sen. Obama.

What I thought was great was the Lackawanna County had the second highest percentage of votes for Obama in the state, behind only Philadelphia. I guess that puts to rest all of the crap about us being a bunch of gun-toting racists up here in Scranton.

Yay Lackawanna Cty.-- hadn't noticed that. Love the nytimes "county bubbles" map, btw: President Map - Election Results 2008 - The New York Times

The version showing the voting shifts from 2004 to 2008 is fascinating too-- pretty much everywhere shifted blue except for a band of Appalachia through the heart of the deep South.

If Obama wasn't an African American it would never have, I don't think that there are many AA's in Appalachia......

The states that went red to blue in this election obviously have a large AA population in the deep south and as I have said before the Obama campaign pandered to that vote and that is what carried him.

I still think that this is going to blow up in all of our faces when we realize that he is nothing more then another politician.

Another thing I found interesting this time around about PA is that Elk County voted for Obama....Elk County is very rural and usually those rural counties vote Republican. Almost every other county in PA that voted for Obama was urban and/or home to a college town.
