Taylor, PA
Hello,
I'm thinking of moving to Taylor. Can anyone give me some information about this town? Is it in a crime area? How far driving distance is it from Scranton? Any information you can provide me with would be helpful.
Thank you.

Hello there!
Taylor is actually a suburb that neighbors Scranton's "West Side." It's pretty non-descript. There's low crime, a small downtown area that's seen better days, and conveniences, including a shopping center with a Price Chopper Supermarket. The new "Taylor Commons" projects is underway and will soon house a new Wal-Mart Supercenter and various other smaller stores. The main north-south arteries in Taylor are Main Avenue and Keyser Avenue---Main Avenue will take you into "Downtown" West Side Scranton, which has been rebuilding itself in recent years, and Keyser Avenue will take you up to the area of McDade Park, I-476, and the Morgan Highway (to the Abingtons). There's around 6,000 residents. The big drawback to the community is that it's home to a rather massive landfill; nearby residents often complain of the foul stench in the summer. Then again, I've also heard that residents of Taylor don't pay any town taxes to fund town services thanks to the revenues from the landfill, so I suppose if you could find a part of town that's a good distance away from it, then you could live here just fine. As I said, there's really not much in the town itself---established neighborhoods of older homes, a newer sudivision or two, churches, bars, pharmacies, etc., but Scranton is only a 5-minute drive to the north. The community, along with the neighboring town of Moosic, is part of the Riverside School District.

Well, you are correct, not a very big town, but it once was home...... Union Street actually takes one from Main Street to Keyser Avenue, passing the off exit from the Turnpike. Plus, a right / left turn (depending on your direction) will take one over the Lackawanna River to Montage Mtn., Glenmaura and I-81. I have never smelled anything from the landfill when I've been there in summer, but I am used to the rotten egg smell of the culm dumps after rain storms in my tender years. And what self-respecting town in NEPA doesn't have a beer garden on (almost) every corner?

The smell from the landfill has never botherd me, actuall I never even smelled it once and I have been living in taylor for over 6 years. I live aprox 1 mile below the landfill. As the other poster has stated, Scranton and the surrounding areas have been enjoying a welcome growth spurt with our own little town included in that. We have the Yankees AAA Ball team only minuets from home and Most Homes in Taylor Can see the friday night fireworks from their porches. Just another or mile or so up the mountain you will glad to know we have Sno Mountain and Toyota Pavillion which hosts a nice summer concert series. During the summer Sno Mountain doubbles as a water park. Just moments away is Wacovia Arena also full of concerts, Hockey and Arena Football. If you can't find somthing here to do to pass the time then it must be Christmas.
