Welcome to NEPA! Is there anything any of us could do to help make your transition any easier? Tips on restaurants? Insight into local events? Political discussion?

I'm sorry I can't be of much assistance to you on the employment front, as I myself have been having a terribly difficult time locating a job in my field. It's not just me either before some of you come on here to say "HA HA!!!" My tax professor told another of my friends that employers in general are just REALLY cutting back on hiring. Reznick canceled its second round of interviews. Until this recession is over we're in for a wild ride. Thankfully I'm still living at home with minimal monthly expenditures and have a stable and very secure job, but for some of my friends I truly do feel for them.

Garage doors and customer service, but I am willing to learn other trades...if someone is willing to take on a trainee.

In the mean time until you pick up something solid why not try working in the millworks department (doors/windows) at a Home Depot or Lowe's? I'm only a student and earn $11/hr. as a customer service associate (plus commissions on large-ticket items) I know specialists earn slightly more than I do, and then you have department team leaders, and finally department managers, with responsibilities and pay scales rising progressively. Most purchases in the millworks department seem to be special orders, and you do earn a commission on those, so even if you sneered at that $11/hr. figure consider how much more that may be if you are great at approaching people and are knowledgeable about your subject. Considering you have experience with garage doors, learning about the features of French doors, storm doors, windows, etc. shouldn't be too difficult, and given your experience you shouldn't have much trouble snagging a position. Even though we're in a recession of sorts Lowe's is still doing very well, and I'd assume the same for Home Depot. It seems people have cut back everywhere except for buying items to improve their homes. If you want to use me as a positive reference if you should apply at Lowe's, feel free to let me know. I've been employed there since early-2005 and am generally well-regarded.

An internet search provided these results for garage door suppliers in Scranton. It couldn't hurt to give one of these places a call to see if they'd be interested in hiring a sales person or installer.

Might want to check with Sears, I think they do a good number of garage door installs, even if they just refer you to local contractors, who may need your services. Also Mesko Glass, they do a large number of various door installs, including self opening styles which are probably very similar.
Good luck and let us know how you make out.
