The city doesn't have to remain in disrepair forever. If enough of my energetic, youthful, suburban friends and I want to charge onward with our hopes and dreams of seeing our future city thrive again, then why should we let the naysayers win? You're one of the many NEPA residents/visitors who like to point out our flaws without offering any solutions. At least I can see some sort of potential where others just see despair. If I were to move to my greener pasture of San Francisco, "among my kind", then wouldn't I just be another person who did have the potential to help Scranton and let it go to waste? (Cough...Abington residents...cough!)

I did not mean that they would lose $$ by tearing blight down but when the city owns the land and has to pay to mainatin it then it is a burden on the tax base. I am a huge fan of rehabing the structures or at least selling them to QUALIFIED BUYERS at a affordable rate based on the fact that they will rehab and it will be a profitable property on the tax base. Free parking lots do not generate $$$$. Other than that I am all for it! I think its a great idea as long as the burden can fall on the county and not the city then sure why not get something back for the last county tax raise.

Just as an aside to the tree topic, I know in NY if you contact the state forestry office you can get free tree seedlings for reforestation purposes. Maybe Pa has the same program.
I remember there were quite a few varieties to choose from, you just have to check mature height/width, root system invasiveness & disease resistance of each variety to plant the right tree in the right place. Maybe an avenue to check out.
If you have any questions I'm a horticulturist. Hence the "jungle" name.
