todays paper , an article that distressed Scranton is going to spend $700,000 to build a library in South Side, Shouldnt that be a county project? The N.Scranton branch recently closed its doors, is there enough usage to have two large libraries in the city? Whenever I go to the Albright it doesnt seem very crowded. I believe that the $700,000 could be more wisely used elsewhere

Hell the county even said that they cannot afford the library.... (http://scrantontimes.com/articles/2008/11/20/news/sc_times_trib.20081120.a.pg3.tt20library_s1.210325 2_top6.txt - broken link)

Mr. Doherty will also have to overcome a continued lack of financial help from Lackawanna County, where the majority commissioners balked at his request to raise the library tax by $20.

With the national economy sputtering, the county is in even less of a position to raise taxes now than it was in the summer, county spokeswoman Lynne Shedlock said.

“We’ll just have to continue without them,” Mr. Doherty said.

What the hell is wrong with Doherty???

You're right in asking what the hell is wrong with Doherty, since the library is a county-owned library....part of the Lackawanna County Library System. Its not the city's jurisdiction.

IF we build the library without the county and its library system then where shall they get the books to fill this place?

Doherty needs to stop.....This is as bad or worse then the $350,000 dog park...

Highland will get the design contract and either Scartelli or Constanzo will get the construction bid.

Time to pay off those last few debts to contributors before he is voted or bows out of office.

I think this is part of his master plan to turn South Side into TriBeCa after failing to turn Downtown into Greenwich Village.

Why don't they buy an empty property, and put a library in it? I'm sure there are more then enough empty storefronts, old warehouse type places ect. that can be re-occupied at a big savings to the taxpayers.

I think you'd need a few hundred skyscrapers to pull either of those idea's off.

the money needs to be spent wisely--when i arrived here,i discovered that the library was inaccessible to the handicapped--no ramps,no elevator acess to reference, and the staff at information had not a clue if any libraries in the county were handicap friendly----shameful in this day and age!

Noooo The library doesn't even need to be built nor should it. This is a photo op and a push for votes from Minooka and Southside.
