Smoking ban NOT hurting business...
I was in 2 different bar/restaurants this past weekend, and it was really nice to not smell like an ashtray afterwards.....stopped at happy hour on my way home from work on Friday and didn't even need a shower that night! And the places seem to be doing great business....so much for the smoking ban killing business.
I don't go out very often, having kids and all, but it was nice not to stink afterwards....

I just wish the ban was stricter than it is. So many places still allow smoking because of the way the law is (if a certain percentage of revenue is from food than smoking is banned, but if it's just a bar, then smoking is permitted, or something to that effect?). Still makes sitting AT a bar in most places unbearable.....I feel like sort of a hypocrite because I only quit smoking in July and would probably be whining about the law if I was still a smoker, but since quitting, it truly is annoying to have to walk out of these places reeking of smoke. I can't even believe I let myself walk around smelling that way for so long! lol. I went out last week with friends of mine that smoke, and sat by an open window freezing, sticking my nose out for fresh air. Hard to believe that only about 4 mos. ago I was inhaling that crap right into my lungs. And now that all of the smokers are congregating to one area of the buildings (usually AT the bar), it really does make sitting AT the bar unbearable in most places. Sigh.

I agree, because I am an ex-smoker as well.....but I think that most people who are completely disgusted by cigarette smoke are ex-smokers, since we know how strong the addiction is, and had to struggle even when we really wanted to quit.
As far as the smoking ban not applying to all bars.....I just avoid smoking bars anymore. I will not patronize any place that still allows smoking.

I can say I never smoked and I've always been disgusted by it. Just a vile, smelly habit. I love going into places now and not having that lingering smell on your clothes and in your hair when you get home. I figured it wouldn't have an effect on establishments.

Go Phillies says the bars are doing great business under the ban. Which shows exactly why the ban isn't needed: if owners make money banning smoking on their own they'll ban it on their own.Somehow I doubt that's the common experience though. Unless you want to call all the bar/restaurant/bowling/bingo owners too dumb to know how to make money with their own businesses and decisions.
Want to see what happened in Minnesota with their ban at bingos and casinos? You're already seeing something like it here with the partial ban, but watch for the drop to go up to twenty to thirty + % if they ever do a full ban. See the quick graph from gvt. figures at:

When I smoked...
I was especially aware of the fact that other people did not ask to inhale my smoke. When I smoked, I did not smoke in enclosed public places. I recall dating a girl and meeting her parents for the first time. Her father smoked a pipe in his home. After a while, I went out on the deck to smoke. The Mother came out and said that I could smoke inside. I refused. To me, it was consideration and simple, common sense.
Recently, after avoiding bars, I went out and visited an old friend who owns a local tavern. Yes, it was refreshing to raise a few glasses, without sitting in a "1930's-far-eastern-industrial-setting!"
This change happened in Boston while I was living there. So many people screamed that business would dwindle and cafes would shrink and die. The exact opposite happened! Crowds fill smokefree bars here. Like myself, a new clientele has shown its face. And others go outside for a few minutes. In the city, that was a perfect way to meet new people. Step outside every hour and ask someone for a light and your in business!

I have noticed that a few of the local "corner bars" are extremely busy anymore. I am not sure if it is do to the weather or the smoking ban. I think that many people who drink also smoke and are leaving the restraunt bars and flocking to the smaller bars that allow smoking. That is my observation anyway. At least it is helping out the smaller business owners.

True, the smokers may be congregating where they are still able to smoke, and also I think corner bars may be doing better these days because people can walk to them in their neighborhoods, rather than driving somewhere and risking a DUI.
I'm not sure why there are people opposed to this smoking ban. It is a lot less strict than other states and offers smokers a place to go where they can still smoke and offers nonsmokers the chance to go out again and not breathe in smoke and smell like an ashtray. It seems its a win-win situation, and is not hurting business owners at all.
