Funny how the NY/NJ transplants ***** and moan about this area and look down on us natives as some kind of toothless, banjo-picking, uneducated hillbillies, yet they choose to move here. This is a free country, if you hate it here so much, you are always free to move somewhere else...if NJ is so great, why aren't you there? Couldn't hack it in the "big city?" You're no better than anyone in this area.
It seems to be the new human "element" involved here...
People who move from 1 area to another, now expect the new area to be "just like home", but with new scenery. It's come to be the "expected norm".
We have the same problem down here!! People are ALWAYS p***ing & moaning that "well, back in (fill in state) the pizza was real pizza", or "back in (fill in state) we had (fill in gripe)". After a while, we residents who moved here to BE here get tired of it!! When I hear this now I just say "well, if it's that much better in (fill in state), why don't you move back"??
Down here, the majority of transplants move here solely for our winter weather. They "expect" here to be JUST like (fill in state), which it is not!! Florida is NOT NY or NJ or Michigan or Canada or ANYWHERE!! It's Florida!!
The same applies to NEPA or ANYWHERE!!
When our grandparents came over from other countries, they brought with them traditions & "pieces" of their homeland which they applied here to make it feel more like "home". They didn't expect it to be the same!! That's changed, & now the expectations are for the new area to be a continuation of the old with no "wiggle room" for difference!!
The old saying goes..."when in Rome, do as the Romans do"....

It's not just NY/NJ transplants (some of whom don't ***** and moan all the time), but plenty of natives to the area too.. They're free to move somewhere else too. NJ is thoroughly awesome; I recommend they give it a try.
Oh, are you saying you have teeth and don't play the banjo?! :P

Really most of the natives that I know complain about how our area is being run into the ground and they do not complain about the area just how its being ruined. The Scranton city gov't sucks, period and they have dragged the city down with them.
The powers to be up and down the valley do not see what they have been doing to this region because most of them cannot see past their own noses.
NEPA rocks and I have lived in NJ and my family maintained a home there for years as well, but this is where we wanted to live.
If NJ is so awesome then why is everybody moving to PA? If its so awesome then why did you move here?

Does the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area feel like a major metropolitan center like the population statistics show?
No. We ARE a major metropolitan center, but whenever someone tries to bring something "urbane" to either Scranton or Wilkes-Barre all people do is belly-ache about it.
Oh, and to the original poster, its not the "Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area," its the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area. You don't hear people say ridiculous things like:
Camden/Philadelphia area
Greensburg/Pittsburgh area
Alexandria/Washington area
Anaheim/Los Angeles area
Tacoma/Seattle area
Ft. Lauderdale/Miami area
Newark/New York City area
Gary/Chicago area
Fort Worth/Dallas area
St. Petersburg/Tampa area
So why would Wilkes-Barre, which is near half the population of Scranton, and not even known outside of PA, be listed before Scranton, which is larger and more well-known than Wilkes-Barre?? Like it or not, Wilkes-Barre, you are Scranton's ugly red-headed stepchild. The only reason the airport is named backwards is because of your old crooked congressman Dan Flood.
