We are coming from one of the most affluent areas of Long Island, which also has one of the best school districts (Three Village). My children's school DOES NOT wear uniforms nor do they have an extreme dress code. The only schools in my area that have uniforms are SOME private schools and some poor school districts where they worry about gang activity, etc. Uniforms DO NOT help in learning, nor do they keep the children safe. If New York wasn't so expensive, we probably would stay here, but we are paying over $18,000 a year in taxes and they are going up and Governor Patterson has taken away the Star program where we could get money back from our taxes, and he is continuing to further tax the middle class in New York.
If you go to: Greatschools.net and compare Coughlin Jr./Sr. High School to Wyoming Valley West Jr./Sr. High School and Pleasant Valley Schools, you would see that Coughlin is the better school and is more diverse which we are looking for.
Also if you want to do a little research into schools and uniforms I have several books for you to read: Uniforms Exposed (2005) by Jennifer Crask and The School Uniform Movement and What it tells us about America by
David Brunsma
There was a time when uniforms were not needed. I remember those times.
Now, with the gangs, with children not required by their parents to leave home for school looking proper. This is the time and place where new clothing rules will have to come to be. Sad news, but required information.....
Did I always feel this way......No.
When teens think it is ok for their pants to be hanging at their knees, someone with some proper character has to step up to the plate.
This is the time. We are the adults here. A child shouldn't leave home with a dress up to the waist, nor pants that might as well be off.
Unfortunately, the Pocono area is getting gangs, and crime. To nip this in the bud......as far as school goes, it means getting uniformed children entering the doors. It is a sign of the times.
I praise the schools now for seeing this before their eyes. Lets not be blind to the current trends of our area. The schools who want to have a uniform dress code are the ones who care for your child and their well being.......
It was not this way always.........it is this way now.
Brand names have never impressed me. Other things are so much more important in life......
I see this is also a taxation thread.......We're on a roll!!........ PS I've read the Pros and Con's the Pros win ......( sign of the times)

It is pretty amazing. These discussions tend to take on a life of their own, but that just seems like the nature of discussion boards. I try not to fight it unless it's a blatant attempt to completely derail a topic, which I don't think this was.

If your question wasn't answered sufficiently, maybe summarize the direct answers you've gotten and ask for more specific details on any other areas you're considering. Just a thought.

And keep in mind that these discussions--especially on more charged issues--often are not a representative sample of the population here. (E.g. this thread where opinions were ~10-2 for Barletta over the eventual winner, Kanjorski.
http://www.city-data.com/forum/north...orski-lou.html ) So, I'd take with a grain of salt anyone speaking for the whole region.

Well with the Kanjorski (D) vs. Barletta (R) example also realize that the senior citizens were the ones who voted overwhelmingly in favor of re-electing Paul Kanjorski, and they are a demographic with a negligible presence (if any) on our forum. My own township is one of the few in all of Northern Luzerne County with a Republican tilt and went for Barletta, and I'm proud to say I was one who voted for him (along with Obama!) I also suspect that Chris Doherty will win his re-election bid next year in the Electric City, despite his widespread hatred on this forum.

I HAVE a Mc Mansion and I am renting it out in order to move to NEPA. I HAD a Lincoln Navigator and I got rid of it just as much for its gas consumption as I did for the dirty looks I got from people at Democratic headquarters.

Wow I am absolutely so impressed by you and all that you have... Really I am because you know us unedcamacated folks up here in pennsyltuckey are nothing but a bunch of podunk hillbillies that sit and around and watch the grass grow..........

Also I still would like to know where you are going to find this magical "Urban Area" in NEPA?

Just maybe, I mean maybe you should probably rethink this whole NEPA thing........

Democratic Headquarters huh? WOW thats awesome..........Your one of those fancy political folks aren't ya?

All that and ya probably never left Da Island.......

Can someone please explain to me if they tell you when your child that if your from NY that you are better then the rest of the world?
Quote was from...WeluvPa

I am wondering this about our neighbors from LI.......
Since my hubby has requested him to go golfing four or five times now, and that has been fluffed off....
Also since in NJ we had so many nice, friendly, neighbors.....and this group is so anti-social.
I keep trying to come up with why someone would be unfriendly, I was never taught that trait........
So maybe thats it, its taught when they are born there. ( I don't know, I'm just trying to figure this out)
