It is what it is, and Wilkes-Barre and Scranton are much closer to being small towns than they are big cities. Which is OK with me....NY and Philly are only a couple of hours away if I want the "big city."

It's important to like where you are. And this is nothing personal. I've been visiting NYC for fourty years and I get new experiences every time I am there! I recently posted a new album on Facebook of NYC pics, entitled "NYFC!" Some of the photos are outrageously fun! I visit Philadelphia on occassion, but nothing there gets close to Gotham. I am glad I live this close to such a wondrous place! When I need a quick, day-trip fix, I drive downriver, along the Susquehanna and take pics of our Capital City, which has a ...reasonable skyline! A very nice guy started a website for Harrisburg pics. Here are my fifty-some entries. Comments are made by other photographers, which creates a very healthy interaction! If such a site were available for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, imagine the possibilities!

I like the Harrisburg skline. As a matter of fact, I voted for Harrisburg on the "favorite Pa. mid-sized city skyline" on the Pennsylvania Forum, even over my hometown, Wilkes-Barre.

well...
I'm not sure what cities fall into that category, but I'd guess Harrisburg would be tops with the Capitol Building and the reflections from the Susquehanna! What else is there that would be close in aesthetic appearance? Scranton? Wilkes-Barre? Reading? Erie? I'd feel foolish voting for ******** even if I lived there!
btw, I posted Photos in the City-Data NYC Forum. Take a look W-Bp. I have some interesting "skylines" in this album. Look for N.Y.F.C.

Oh come on now!!! You can't compare Manhatten's skyline with Wilkes-Barre's skyline. That's not fair! Of course the better skyline is Wilkes-Barre's...by a landslide!!!

I don't think I made that comparison. I've been in forums where people try to put NYC up against Boston, which is futile! I equate Boston with Philadelphia in many ways. I consider them "sister" cities. I prefer Philly over Beantown. Boston has too many buildings with the same height and flat tops, ugh. The gap between the Downtown and Back Bay is ... awkward.

As an artist that works in this field, what are your favorite american big city skylines? I like Chicago alot. I also like Pittsburgh because of the three rivers and the mountainous background. I know NYC is the obvious choice, but I've seen it so many times and it's so famous that I picked something else "for a change of scenery"

Pa!
I like both Pittsburgh and Philadelphia skylines. They both have a variety of elements in their "downtown clusters!" I'm running late for work. Had to clean the sidewalks and cars! Other U.S. Cities....later!

Minneapolis has a very nice skyline as well for a city of its size, and the sculpture gardens across the Mississippi River from this city always create a nice atmosphere for the foreground of a photo. Seattle, with the Space Needle, Mt. Rainier, and the Puget Sound all complementing one another very nicely, also has a jaw-dropping skyline (on the rare sunny day at least).

So many variations....
Each major U.S. has some particular angle that is better than most. For instance, the traditional shot of Boston from Cambridge, near the Harvard bridge, of Back Bay, is- in my opinion, boring. Tow tall buildings seemingly miles apart. I won't waste my time finding pics. Shooting downtown Boston from across the harbor in East Boston is beautiful. I used to take night shots from that vantage point.
Minneapolis has a strong skyline. Detroit is surprisingly nice. Pittsburgh has a lot going for it and "three rivers" helps! My top six faves for the U.S. are N.Y.C., Seattle, Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Pittsburg. So many more are beautiful. Of course- cities along bodies of water have an edge.
