Default Anyone Volunteer in the Scranton area??

I am looking for a volunteer position to make me step outside of my own box...so to speak. I'm not looking for anything too emotionally draining as I already have that going on in my life. Looking for something where I feel usefull and a get a sense of accomplishment in a somewhat social, upbeat atmosphere.
Any suggestions form your own experience?

As you already know, I lost my mom.. But before she passed there was alot of good people that helped her have a hot dinner everyday.. Below is some info, and one of the best things you could do to see a smile on the face of someone your helping....

Meals-On-Wheels and other senior meal delivery or non-profit congregate meal programs provide meals to millions of seniors throughout the United States. Through such programs, seniors who could not or would not otherwise eat properly are provided with services that help them live a healthy and enjoyable life.

Volunteers are necessary to any local non-profit senior meal program and you don't have to be a good cook or have a lot of time in order to volunteer. Program volunteers do more than drive from door to door. Volunteers are needed to help prepare and package dinners to be delivered, organize schedules, make phone calls, load delivery vehicles, and deliver meals.

Perhaps as important as getting meals to seniors is your smiling face and some words of kindness and friendship. Many seniors are lonely and those that assist in meal programs are their only daily contact with other people. Many delivery volunteers take a little time with each senior to visit and provide much needed conversation.
Whether you have only a few hours one day per week, can volunteer every day, or can only work a few hours on a weekend, your assistance is needed.

I can suggest the St. Francis soup kitchen on Penn ave in the city. I will also keep you in mind and let you know of any volunteer stuff that I may hear of (park clean-ups, drives, etc.).

I know that some hospitals will even pay people to sit with disoriented patients to make sure they don't wander off or start ripping out their IVs and stuff like that, but that might be a little too difficult given your statements.

I know the ARC of NEPA is always in need of some help. The contact woman there is fantastic and grateful for an extra set of hands!

The Albright Library in Scranton could always use a volunteer.

I volunteer at Hope Hospice. It is not for everyone but if you can handle it, it is very rewarding.

Also look at area nursing homes.
It isn't always easy, but you know you are helping those who need you, and that makes you feel good.

ILP don't sell yourself short...from what you've told me, I think you're stronger than & can handle more than you think. As John said, "Meals On Wheels" is a great venue as is ARC. Maybe talk to someone at an area hospital to help guide you to what's in your area.

Down here we have an organization that helps seniors by helping them in their homes (light cleaning, talking, shopping, etc.)...I'll try to find info on it & see if there's a similar one in your area...

There's no organization in Pa like the one here in Fla that I could find, but I did find this link that may help...
