I'm so glad to hear this

"500-Block Lackawanna Avenue: This will feature lofts, galleries, boutiques, and restaurants, along with some urban green space."

I hope the city will see a blossoming of artistic and curtural pursuits.

Perhaps this will also help Pittston to see some renewal too....if they'll just stop tearing down the older buildings. Would be great to see that place as a mecca of Italian culture instead of the run down shops I see there now. I see some hope there!

They've been making a lot of progress on the 500 project, maybe I'll see if I can get some more pictures.

You'll be happy to hear that Downtown Pittston has just recently begun to make some strides in the positive direction recently. All overhead utilities have been moved underground. Main Street has been repaved. Sidewalks have been torn up and replaced. New brick crosswalks line major intersections. New Victorian-era street lights now adorn much of North Main Street and Kennedy Boulevard, and 2009 will bring the next phase of this street scape project to the southern end of the downtown area. Several new businesses have either just opened or will soon be opening, including a coffee house (City Perk), Irish pub (Dooley's), antiques store, and a Turkey Hill convenience store. Come to think of it while in the other thread I suggested that Pittston Crossings strip mall to you as a potential studio location due to its visibility and convenience to I-81 for your customers, Downtown Pittston may offer a much less expensive option.

"If they just stop tearing down the older buildings," you say? Unfortunately the elected officials of Pittston have never met a historic building they didn't like to see hit with a wrecking ball in favor of "more parking lots." A VISIONARY leader would erect a parking garage downtown (preferably by reclaiming the huge plot currently occupied by both Burger King and CVS), and would have restored all of the buildings on Main Street that were razed to make way for parking lots. What do I know though? I'm just some dumb kid.

This is good to hear. I believe all utilities should be underground. It makes everything look much less cluttered.

It's been a while since I've been through Pittston. I'll be visiting family nearby this summer and can't wait to see the rennovations. Scrantonluna, thanks for the pics. Please post more when you can.

A white elephant for sure Dan. None of this stuff gets me excited, because this should have been done years ago in this city. I'd say Scranton is a least 30 years behind in terms of progression of other cities similar in size.
