Circuit City Officially Going Out-of-Business
Well it looks as if Best Buy stores will be getting even busier now that Circuit City has announced today that it is too fiscally-insolvent to recover from bankruptcy and will liquidate its stores, including ones locally in Dickson City and Wilkes-Barre Township, putting another 35,000 people on the unemployment lines. I just joined a retail-oriented message board last night, and now there are even rumors that my own employer may be downsizing in 2009. Does anyone have "job security" anymore?

Dang. I like Circuit City better than BestBuy. Even though it's more expensive, it's a nicer store. This is sad. My girlfriend's husband is a manager for some Circuit city division. wonder what's gonn a happen to him.

It's possible that given Best Buy's solid financial footing they may buy some of Circuit City's stores in markets where they do not yet have a presence and retain those employees. It would make solid financial sense for them do so as they could invest in new areas for a fraction of the cost of building a new store. In our area there are already Best Buys in Dickson City, Wilkes-Barre Township, Muncy, and Stroudsburg, to my knowledge, and I can foresee them coming to the Selinsgrove area soon with that new Monroe Marketplace development going in.

I think I still have some job security, considering people are still reading books. As long as Borders, Barnes and Noble and Amazon are still afloat, my company, Harper Collins will still flourish. So people, keep on reading.

Not to strike the fear of God into you or anything, but Waldenbooks is closing most of its stores, including ones in the Wyoming Valley and Schuylkill Malls, and Borders, their parent company, isn't doing too well either and may also go belly-up before the close of 2009. I fear we may enter a depression if things don't reverse themselves soon! Amazon and Barnes & Noble continue to do well though, so that's something to be grateful for.

Unless of course people start eating each other when they can no longer afford to buy groceries! I'm just warning you all I'm stringy and would be tough to chew!

I guess it's tough all over Paul. I am grateful that I have a job everyday, but I do realize that at any moment it can all come crashing down and it could be over just like that.
I was also wondering and maybe you know Paul, do the people in Circuit City get a straight salary or do they get strictly commission, or both?

I would presume they work on both. I receive an hourly wage at Lowe's, and I make commissions on higher-end items like lawn tractors and snowblowers, as well as special order items and extended protection plans. I have friends at Best Buy who make an hourly wage as well as commissions on large-ticket items. I'd assume Circuit City was no different.

Thanks. I kind of figured that myself, but since you work at Lowe's, I figured I would defer to you. Let's just hope this economy gets better before it gets any worse. We don't need anymore people losing anymore jobs.
