Centralia Visited...
We decided to walk the closed portion of the highway in Centralia today.
After walking at least one quater mile, the rupture can be seen.
Garbage is dropped into broken road surface.

How many houses are still standing and occupied there? I drove through there about 4 years ago and saw residents still in their homes. I knew there was a buyout but not everyone accepted.
I remember being able to drive right through town and seeing the steam all around as you went through. Quite a sight there - thanks for the pictures.

Sure you want to get that close to the road there?
I drove through a couple of years ago. Sad, but not much you can do.

That garbage tells that people likely sit there and drink or whatever, aren't people concerned about the long term inhalation of carbon dioxide? To sit so close to those fumes for maybe an hour or more could be toxic.
Thanks for the photos AmeriKen. Did you happen to go to where there are some houses still occupied?

Here's some information and photos...
We didn't go through the side streets. I used to see a few houses when coming through on Rte. 42. I didn't see any today. It began to snow when we arrived, so we cut our visit short. We were on our way to Kulpmont for a visit. The ride to Centralia involves some steep ridges and we knew that waiting too long would be dangerous. Later that afternoon we were unable to go back the way we came. Cars were sliding sideways. I took the safest route home through Shamokin, Paxinos, Sunbury, Northumberland and Danville.

Such beautiful land to be ruined by the "gosh awful" underneath.
I'd of been quite afraid to get near the area..........then again I walked around a volcano that was spewing sulpher and it erupted two week later. I was a bit braver then.
It did say on the signs to cross over the cracks in the road at your own risk.....and we did.
I did go through the Centralia area a couple of times, quite spooky.......How does one sleep?
