Thus far I've invested several hours over the past two days deeply engrossed in a project using statistics from right here on City-Data to showcase various traits and trends for the three-county (Luzerne/Lackawanna/Wyoming) metro area of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. I don't have Microsoft Excel on my home computer, so this has been QUITE a tedious task thus far, so please bear with me for future updates. There are 139 municipalities in these three counties (assuming I didn't forget any), so it takes a considerable length of time to complete these. In the end I hope to have this thread "stickied" by coartist88 by Valentine's Day (my target date for completion of this project). It will be a one-stop resource for those who are pondering relocation into our area to find out where the school districts with the highest median home value appreciations are, find the local municipality with the strongest annual median household income growth, find the local municipality with the strongest concentration of "eggheads", what township is the most Republican, etc. It is also an interesting way to see what areas of our metropolitan region really could benefit the most from President Obama's proposed stimulus package (most noticeably Edwardsville, Luzerne County, which you'll see below).

I don't read into the the monetary demographics as my wife and I earn significantly higher than the median and also see most of our neighbors as looking reasonably affluent. Maybe there are areas of Wilkes Barre that bring the median down but I'm not seeing it my section.

Don't forget that statistics can be easily skewed. Approximately 10%-15% of the city's residents are college students. I work the most out of any of my peers, and in 2008 I only earned $15,000. I don't live in the Diamond City, but if I had my own apartment, my household income of $15,000 would help to bring down the city's median household income. Furthermore your city has SEVERAL large-scale low-income housing projects, which may house a few thousand people combined as well. Then we also have Provincial Towers, which mostly houses elderly residents on fixed incomes. Edwardsville is God-forsaken impoverished beyond relief, but it is also burdened with a disturbingly high concentration of low-income housing projects and Section 8-friendly apartments, all of which drag that place down. La Plume Township is the one community in the Greater Abington area that is not exactly raking in the dough. Why? It is home to Keystone College.
If nothing else I was MOST surprised to see Abington Township (Waverly) so LOW on the list. Waverly is often joked about as being the most affluent part of NEPA, yet it isn't the top dog. My neighborhood in Pittston Township is REPLETE with luxury vehicles and high-end homes, yet our median household income is only about $51,000. There is a high concentration of mobile homes in the Glendale section that bring our community down, as well as a high concentration of elderly residents on fixed incomes in the Cork Lane section of the township.

Funny what median means, looks like. I know a couple of retired teachers, one currently has a job, living in Laflin who make more than a lot of people below retirement age, actively employed and sometimes working several jobs. I also know a couple of folks who live in big, lovely, homes in Bear Creek, large properties and after many years of ownership, don't know if they'll be able to hang on to them. It's not always what it seems.
