I used to live in NEPA and now live in Charlotte, NC. Even "tobacco country" is about to become smoke-free. A bill has been introduced by lawmakers banning smoking in public buildings and is expected to pass soon. I know many are rooting for it!

As far as the cancer rate in NEPA, the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute, located in Scranton, studies local incidence and mortality rates. Here is a link to their research:

The biggest cause I think is Radon in the homes. Where I bought a home they withheld this fact and I had to seal all the cracks and openings in the basement. On Long Island I lost both parents to cancer and lived in a cottage like home that only had a crawl space so we lived over Radon gas. Fortunatly I moved to PA in 1985 so I was not to exposed as my parents. And where I grew up in Queens NY, we lived in the finished basement and first floor that probebly had high levels of Radon also.
