Default Area is generally safe

Overall Scranton's crime rate is relatively low for a city its size. Most crime that occurs is either domestic-related ( when one party assualts a relative or friend) or people involved with the 'dark side'-drug deals gone bad, etc....the types of crimes you will find anywhere. But for the average person who's not involved in drug deals, it's a safe city and that's true for the surrounding areas as well.
You should be able to find a nice selection of homes in that price range...but Carbondale? It's not a 'bad town' but you can definitely find more attractive towns within a short commute of Scranton.

HI,
my family and I are moving to Scranton too. We are also looking for a safe neighborhood possibly in Scranton itself and/or its proximity. If you read my other posts, you can see I've been researching public schools that are good and safe (we have 3 small children, ages 2, 5 and 8). If you send me a PM I can give you more details about the areas and the schools we are considering.
Good luck with your move!

Thnis is what helps me to decide where to move...
Look at a google map at the places where you need to be closest, if a job is dictating the move, start with the job location, then figure out how many miles is a resonable commute to you. Then mmake a big circle with your job in the middle and check out all towns that fall in that area.

My little system...

Mayfield is right outside of Carbondale and you have enough to afford a nice home in a safe and close knit area. Check it out.
