I'm on the Susquehanna river at least 3 days a week and the Lackawanna river 1 day a week paddling and fishing. I love it here in NEPA, but I DON'T LIKE WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO SCRANTON OVER THE LAST 8 YEARS.

Its easier for those of you that have just moved here and those that haven't yet, but seem to know soo much about our city, to judge it because you have nothing to base it on.

Sheena your comments are funny because less then 4 months ago we were nothing more then "Redneck Hunters".....

I totally get the difference. I see many things in Scranton government and use of resources that just make me shake my head with disqust and question the reality of those in power.

That is different from not loving it here and being happy.

Thanks all for the congrats.

Scran, that sounds like a great plan with your folks. I'd like to get my mom and my aunt to share a duplex nearby some day. It'd be the perfect set-up where they could see a lot of each other and work on the garden, but still retreat into their own spaces when they need to.

W-B Proud-- you're probably right about my not surviving WB a month. Still haven't been down there for a minute even.. Hopefully this summer I'll go see what our other metro-area anchor is all about.

No, the trophy will do just fine.

The one at the Lackawanna Little League field (I think that's the name of the one I'm thinking of) is really nice.

Congratulations on your One Year anniversary! April marks seven for us. It's gone so fast!
Thanks-- where did you move from, WW? Congrats yourself on the 7-year mark!

Maybe you're thinking of the playground at the end of Dorothy St. in Tripps Park--there are ball fields up there. It is a pretty nice playground, and that's where we usually go. It's just a bit far for a quick jaunt in the stroller to expend some energy, and far from usual lunch spots, etc.

----

Speaking of the kids that reminds me of another plus: The birthing center at Moses Taylor hospital. Holy crap, it felt like a serene spa compared to the pandamonium when our first kid was born, on an insanely busy night in Manhattan. Moses Taylor was very calm and quiet, with nice views of the valley.

I also remembered another mixed bag: Skunks. We've had a skunk visiting our yard for a while. I've tried to make its life a bit difficult so it visits less often, but still signs of it trying to get in. On the plus side, they're supposed to be great for a garden (when they're not temporarily blinding you with their spray.) The eat grubs and other undesirable bugs.

Another minus that came to mind: the name Scranton. Had never really thought much about it, but a few friends lately have noted my new hometown has an awful name. They're right. Attach "/Wilkes-Barre" and it's ten times worse. With a name like Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, our metro area has some tough branding issues to overcome.

You can get "critter ritter" at lowes or home depot for the skunks or you can get Fox urine at Gander moutain in liquid or in a spray can bomb type. I use the fox urine around the perimeter of the property to scare them off and it works...I apply at least once a month in their known pathways. The fox is one of their predators.

Skunks will always travel along soemthing on one side or the other for safety because they cannot see past 10ft. If you are 10ft or more away from them they cannot see you and will not spray.

Too lazy to look for the thread, but remember the one we had last year (maybe before then) about skunks, Dan? Was it you that mentioned human hair clippings around the perimiter of your property will help deter them?

Does this mean we can finally give Mr. Elman a haircut under the guise of doing a civic service to his community by repelling rodents?!

I will have to pick up some of the critter ritter, the skunks in my neighborhood are god awful. Do you know if it is safe for dogs, my landlord has one?

Critter ridder drives animals away by taste and smell is what it said on the label and its made by havaheart.

Here is a link...Critter Ridder

The fox urine works as well and has no odor if your worried about it. Its more about the scent of a predator in the area and they will avoid that area.

I haven't used the critter ridder yet, just found it recently, but the urine works well.

The new animal control officers that were hired and plugged into the budget for skunk control are a joke...Another created position for someone because I was told by the full-time animal officer that they ARE NOT SANCTIONED by the state to go after and dispose of wild animals, regardless of what Judy says, that came right from the officer.

We are on our own with the skunks folks......You can pay upwards of $250 to have two trapped and removed but that doesn't mean that more won't come back. This is the breeding time so they will be out during daylight hours looking for alittle love so watch for them.

This issue is city wide and growing each year they are left alone to have more babies and any of your neighbors that keep cat food outside are just setting the dinner table for them and they will never leave.

I don't know about you guys but it pisses me off that I can't let my dogs run around the yard in the evening or day for that matter even with a fence they still get in and I don't need to have 3 dogs sprayed......

Dont bash it ; many people will take pleasure in doing that. But not that many people will give it the compliments it deserves.

I wish I never moved from Medford. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would wind up in Scranton, PA when I was growing up on Long Island.
