Default West Scranton cheerleaders were drunk during parade

Well I guess there is fun for all at the parade......Yep its not about drinking and getting hammered its about celebrating all that is irish in Scranton and that has nothing to do with getting drunk, right?

So if the parade is about families and not booze then why were the cheerleaders drunk? Underage none the less and drunk marching in parade.

Perfect example of what this has turned into, and it had nothing to do with bars opening early, but tradition is tradition and if your from Scranton and your not drunk on parade then your not cool.

West Scranton cheerleaders were drunk during parade

Quote:
“It was a sad situation on everyone’s part,” Mr. Paris said. “I’m very disappointed in the kids. They were representing us there. It’s just a shame.”
Quote:
During the March 14 parade, an adviser to the squad suspected that the students were intoxicated and observed at least one student vomiting, Scranton Police Chief David Elliott said Thursday.

The adviser alerted police, and officers met the cheerleaders after they were finished marching. Police gave Breathalyzer tests to the students the adviser suspected of drinking, Chief Elliott said.

The students who tested positive were then taken home by their parents, and their names were given to the school administration for discipline.
Vomiting while marching in the parade.......Well I guess these kids have been raised in the traditons of Scranton and its wonderful irish traditions.

I don't understand why "Irish traditions" must involve getting wasted off your derriere. Perhaps as an Italian I'm just not accustomed to such "heritage," but no TRUE Irishman that I've ever met would approve of behaving in such a boorish manner.

Some more positive press for Scranton. This doesn't surprise me one bit....how do you expect kids to act when the adults glamorize getting smashed on parade day?

It pi$$es me off when parents excuse this behavior in their kids, and actually get mad at the schools or authorities for busting them. No wonder kids do these things when they have moron parents who have no parenting skills whatsoever.

I'm Irish and I don't understand it. Its a mockery of my heritage. I drink, but I have no desire to drink "green beer" until I puke. "Green beer" isn't even Irish.

I would also like to know why these kids were not charged with underage drinking. I'll bet if they weren't cheerleaders they wouldn't have gotten away with it. This goes back to NEPA's obsession with high school football. If these kids were on the baseball team, the band, the debate club, etc, they would have been charged.

It's because alcoholism is so promoted in this area. People just say "kids will be kids" in situations like this. What about Mr. Passeri, that West Side football player that nearly killed himself and his friends last year because he was driving drunk? Many people DEFENDED him, including one of his schoolmates who came onto this forum to slam me into the ground. I'm sorry, but if you consciously make the decision after drinking to get behind the wheel and you kill someone in the process, you DESERVE whatever punishment comes your way as a result. Thanks to drunk driving West Scranton is getting some bad publicity, a Plains Township fire fighter is dead, an assistant D.A. from Luzerne County forever has his reputation destroyed, and many other problems have befallen us recently as well. I don't get it. I have only RARELY been drunk, and I've never driven while under the influence out of respect for others.

Perhaps if people in NEPA spent a little LESS money on booze and cigarettes and a little more on bettering themselves we wouldn't have an unemployment rate amongst the highest in the nation right now?

To be fair though Mr. Passeri, a high school football stand out from West Side, WAS charged after he was released from the hospital. I was VERY happy to see that because, like you, I assumed everyone would have "just let it slide."

I'm far from perfect myself, but I've never consciously made a decision to hurt someone else. Yes, I've had two speeding tickets, but neither was out-of-line (is doing 56 in a 45 zone on a lonely four-lane roadway in Laflin REALLY a public safety hazard?)

Well, they had to press charges in that case because there were severe injuries....there was no way that could be covered up. But I'll guarantee if they just caught Passeri (or any worshipped high school football "star" around here) stumbling up Main Ave drunk or just caught in the woods drinking, there would be no charges.
