Its bad news if the taxpayers have to foot the bill for it like the Connell Building and 500 Block projects. If the 500 block was so great then why are so many of the store fronts empty and up for rent or lease....

Based on whats been said it should be full by now, Marc's Tatto left and opened on Adams so why did they leave if its such a great place to be????

It will sit empty until the city can actually create a tax structure that will encourage a business to come here instead of driving them away.
At least Scranton can become a tourist destination for the city with the most gorgeous abandoned buildings!

When coupled with the dozens of condos coming to both the Connell Building and the Renaissance at 500 projects, there could realistically be several hundred new people living in Downtown Scranton by 2010. I've long been an advocate of transforming Downtown Scranton into a 24/7 neighborhood, and it appears to now be headed in that direction. The developer claims that the upcoming medical school is increasing demand for downtown living options.
There were supposed to be lots of people living downtown long ago....lots of projects that just never happened....St. Peter's Square, Jefferson Pointe, etc etc.

The only success story I can think of are the Lofts at the Mill way up in Petersburg, but those are totally unrelated to downtown and didn't really spur any other development (unless Mansour's Market/Cafe rose up on account of that loft traffic?)

Obviously Joyce has either been hoping for investors or is just completely over extended.

They will never be constructed, why does he have funds for this and not for the gaping hole on the corner of Linden and Penn?

This is pure propaganda, thats it....What happened to the so called apartments that were going to be on Linden st?

They tore down the Markowitz building, the bakery, the Pub and everything else on linden for nothing.

This structure HAD to be knocked down and people are wondering why so why not put a little diddy in the Times to show progress?

Think about....When they tore down the Markowitz buyilding it was on the news and in the paper that they were making way for progress in the downtown, now its just a hole in the ground and nothing, nothing has happened and nothing will.

Pure propaganda....Its an election year.

Hell he cannot even finish the renovation of the old Penguin lounge on Penn.

Here is the webpage for Wilkes-Barre's newest condo/loft project which is under construction right now. Elevations Lofts : Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania : A development project by Susquehanna Real Estate LP along with The Murray Complex condo's, The Hotel Sterling condo's (along the new riverfront, which is starting to look really nice!), The Stegmaier condo's...Genetti's also plans on converting some of it's hotel rooms into condo's, and a few city development groups are working on bringing in a permanant urban marketplace, like The Reading Terminal Marketplace http://www.readingterminalmarket.org/ for all the new downtown residents. I can't wait until all this happens.

Wilkes-Barre has more potential for being a downtown living hub due to its compact nature, so the increased foot traffic from all of those projects will be much more noticeable. You just need to get a handle on your crime! If they rule the two recent arson fire victims as being homicides, then that will be NINE homicides thus far in 2009 in Luzerne County (with most being in Wilkes-Barre), and we're only four months through the year! The entire city of Minneapolis, which is a VERY large city, by the way, thus far in 2009 has only had four murders. Wilkes-Barre only has 40,000 residents. What's its excuse? Too much inner-city riff-raff and white-trash running amok killing each other over access cards?

But who will live in these condos? Are they creating companies and industry to support this housing boom?

I think they're hoping that empty-nester yuppies from the Abingtons, Back Mountain, Glenmaura, and Mountain Top are all going to descend upon the downtowns like the plague.

The Sterling and the Murray Complex....none of us may live to see anything happen to those places. Lots of pie-in-the-sky promises around here, and nothing becomes of them.

I think the Sterling Project will eventually happen, I don't know about The Murray Complex, I hope it happens! But we can't complain, many projects that were once doubted have happened or are happening right now... The Theater Project for example. Alot of people didn't believe that would ever come to fruition, but it did. The same thing with the Riverfront Project. So you never know. All these projects depend on money being available.
