This discussion isn't about abortion.

Child abuse isn't a hate crime by it's very definition.

When was the last time someone was thrown in jail for calling people a name??

I don't think anyone would disagree with that-- in fact that's the whole point about why this case is so screwed up. The white teenagers got off easy for a large part because of the the race victim.

But with hate crime laws, defendants aren't being punished extra because of the race of the victim. They're being punished for crimes committed with racial animus- whether the victim is white, black or any color. It's like a different type of crime altogether. The state through its voters feels that those types of crimes deserve extra condemnation.

For the second time, you can take a look at the history of racial discrimination in this country and come to a different conclusion, but only a minority of voters feel that crimes committed with racial animus shouldn't be punished more severely. You are a member of that minority.

I think this crime may be different than, for example, a KKK lynching, which were done only because of hatred for black people. The incident in Shenandoah, there is no proof that the victim's race was the motivating factor behind his killing. Sure, they may have yelled racial slurs at him, but that doesn't mean that they decided to beat this guy because he's a Mexican. It seems that other personal issues may have started this fight.

Agree, phillies. There was a history between this group of boys and two of the girls that were present at the fight. There is even some speculation that the girls wanted to get back at these boys for teasing them at school and testifying against them was the perfect way to do it. The more I read about this case, the more I feel that the verdict was absolutely correct.

There are many accounts of this incident all over the web. There is testimony that the victim made five phone calls to his friends for backup, one of them showed up with a gun, and also that a friend kneeling down next to him saw one of the other boys deliver the "fatal" kick to the head. If even half of this account is true, it would explain how the jury could not convict these two boys on the charges that were brought:

Not ignored. Duly noted. Still not an excuse to take a man's life.
