Nescopeck, PA...
My husband and I are looking to move out of NJ once we sell our home. I've heard that Nescopeck and /or surrounding area is nice. Would like to hear from anyone living there, or has lived there. Weather, etc.
Thanks!

Nescopeck is indeed very nice, but it is also very rural, so be prepared for somewhat of a culture shock in that regard (i.e. majority Republican, nothing within walking distance, the smell of fresh manure permeates the air at times, 99% Caucasian, non-Hispanic, and with "high culture" meaning going to a Friday night high school football game). If you're okay with those facets of rural living in Pennsylvania, then I have no apprehensions about recommending Nescopeck to you. You may wish to consider areas nearer to Hazleton (i.e. Conyngham and Sugarloaf Township are both beautiful) or nearer to Bloomsburg (i.e. the townships surrounding the town proper) to be nearer to shopping, dining, and conveniences.
If employment is going to be a concern for you, given our recession you may want to locate a job FIRST and then decide what town in NEPA might be best for you.
Best of luck!

I would recommend the Beech Mountain Lakes complex in Drums. Close enough to Hazleton to fully utilize it (i.e. shopping, movies, etc.) but far away enough to look like rural mountain beauty. Quick, easy access to I-80 for going back to visit friends and family in Jersey and vice versa. I know the place well because my in-laws have a small "2nd home" there that I go to a few weekends/year and I canoe in their pretty lake whenever I'm there. Nice mixes of locals and "transplants" (I live in NY State just north of NY City and lots of people from there and from NJ......I see a lot of cars with NJ plates in the driveways of many homes there when I'm up there). Good luck!

I love this forum! One gets to avoid the tedious research to a large extent by asking locals their opinions. Granted, everyone has one, but that's what helps make our decision. My husband wants to move to VA, that's still first choice, but we're open to all possibilities. We appreciate your help. Good luck to Scranbarre with the upcoming move to VA. If you have the time, would like to hear about the city/town you're heading to in VA. Thanks!

Hello once again J&R,
I've looked at your prior posts, and it appears as if you are most focused in on the Roanoke area of Virginia if you opt against Pennsylvania. I will be moving clear to the opposite end of the state from Roanoke to the rat-race they call Fairfax County (Reston, to be precise). I'm overall confident in my decision. My spacious 960-square-foot one-bedroom unit faces a private golf course for serenity for me to be able to sit on my patio and cram for the CPA exam while I'm also a quick walk to not only shopping such as Barnes & Noble, Best Buy, Harris Teeter (groceries), etc., but also to the mixed-use Reston Town Center.
Welcome to the Reston Town Center.
I've found the people on the GENERAL Virginia forum to be very friendly, but they're much more cutthroat and confrontational on the NoVA sub-forum, where you're automatically black-listed if you disagree with someone's opinion. I know from personal experience that outside of this forum there are plentiful amicable, welcoming, and friendly individuals in Virginia, so it may be best to not judge an area based upon the small representation of members present on here from that area.
Despite all of the political controversies that have now given Luzerne County, PA a black eye in the national media spotlight it was still a solid place to have grown up and has served as an adequate "stepping stone" for me to move on now to greener pastures for my career, political, and romantic endeavors. I'd probably consider Conyngham, Sugarloaf Township, or Drums (Butler Township) before looking into Nescopeck as the former have a more outlying suburban flair to them whereas Nescopeck feels like a rural farming hamlet, but to each his or her own.
