Well David, that appears to be your own decison, freely made. The problem with a military draft is that it takes away an individuals FREEDOM to make their own decision like you have done. Upon being drafted, a draftee is forced to fight a war to protect the very FREEDOM they've already lost. While I believe that some type of compulsary service could be a good thing, I would never be in favor of drafting anyone into the military against their will. I've been thru that, and I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. Being coerced to do something that goes against ones conscience is the very epitome of freedom lost.

Exactly Cosmic. For someone, like me, who doesn't believe in fighting just because the gov't says we should, a draft is just beyond comprehension in a country that proclaims to be free. It also baffles me that anyone would advocate a draft in a country whose Declaration of Independence begins:

"That all men are by nature equally free and independent, and have certain inherent rights, of which, when they enter into a state of society, they cannot, by any compact, deprive or divest their posterity; namely, the enjoyment of life and liberty, with the means of acquiring and possessing property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety."

Seems to me conscription flies straight in the face of the above Declaration.

If our military should be depleted enough in the future that a draft becomes necessary, how else would our country defend itself? I guess the question really is "If you love the freedom and rights that your country affords to you, do you love it enough to fight for it or do you expect everyone else to defend it for you?"

If our country doesn't have a sufficient force to defend it, no one will be free and independent, enjoy life and liberty, or pursue/obtain happiness and safety.

That's the beauty of FREEDOM. We are free to choose whether we fight or not. It's a double edged sword but how else can one have freedom?

Greentown I love both of your thoughts........
It is so true that many died for our freedoms and our liberties.....
Many who were drafted like my Dad and my Husband and those who perished like my husbands uncle, and my uncle also.......
If we came down to a shortage........I'd say...........Come and draft me!
I would do anything and go anywhere to keep America and "our families safe"..........America and its people, mean that much to me.

I'm wondering how many of you who espouse come and draft me have actually served in the military. IF you really mean it, what's keeping you from signing up voluntarily. Why wait?

BTW, I've already served a tour of duty, and I'm not in favor of a military draft. Been there, done that, and it really sucks. I love my country. It's the mostly corrupt politicians and government that I don't care for. I'm not willing to die while some companies building guns, tanks, planes, and other paraphenalia of war get rich from my sacrifices. All those companies should be paying most of their profits back to the service men and women who do the dirty work. Instead, all of that dirty money goes to the fat cat CEOs who have never even seen a gun, outside of their hunting safaris in Africa where they bravely shoot animals that their guides have spotted for them.

That's an easy out for ya! It's easy to be in favor of a draft when you know that your chance of getting drafted is nil.

Although I have a different perspective than DavidWebb, he has put his money where his mouth is, so his opinion carries more weight with me, than someone who has never been in the military and never will be. David, you have my admiration for DOING what you believe in...as long as you don't attempt to force your beliefs on anyone else.

Sorry, I though this thread was for people to post their ideas and opinions as to whether there should be a draft. I didn't realize that our opinions didn't count if we didn't serve. I'm quite sure a good many of the others that gave their opinions on this thread are not worthy of your consideration either.
