Now I could not have said it better. Way to go "Greentown"

Sorry, I though this thread was for people to post their ideas and opinions as to whether there should be a draft. I didn't realize that our opinions didn't count if we didn't serve. I'm quite sure a good many of the others that gave their opinions on this thread are not worthy of your consideration either.
Rest easy. Your opinion counts.

I'd be lying if I pretended that I value all opinions equally. It's a lofty ideal, but it's not my reality. I'm simply admitting to one of many prejudices ( if someone has served or is currently serving in the military I give more weight to their opinions concerning the military ) that color my view of the world.

[quote=CosmicWizard;8698046]I'm wondering how many of you who espouse come and draft me have actually served in the military. IF you really mean it, what's keeping you from signing up voluntarily. Why wait?

I'd be in the "way to old" category too!
But if they had a no ages banned, I'd be first in line.

I've been close enough to experience the draft......the letter.......the goodbyes......the airport..... Watching my Dads face when I said " he is a forward observer"......When asked my husbands assignment.

The history of our parents and our uncles.....

But, knock on my door.......and I'll go......

To me, its keeping our families and children safe on our own soil.....thats worth me going with no secondguessing.

A very wise person wrote a post with this title: Never Use the Word "Old" ~ Just Forever Young

Although I have a different perspective than DavidWebb, he has put his money where his mouth is, so his opinion carries more weight with me, than someone who has never been in the military and never will be. David, you have my admiration for DOING what you believe in...as long as you don't attempt to force your beliefs on anyone else.
Thank you, CosmicWizard...I'm not saying anyone should be "forced" to join the military. Everyone here perceives that is the message but not comprehending that, as I've said in prior posts, if it were already a part of life here in the United States it would just be another part of life. But since it's not and we have the choice whether to join everyone takes the position that I'm in favor in "forcing" everyone. If it were a part of life here it wouldn't be such a big deal everyone here is making it out to be. So from another veteran....thanks again!!

I wouldn't get drafted nor would my husband since we have health issues that kept both of us from *voluntarily* serving in the Armed Forces.

I still don't agree with forcing people to serve.

Ok...clear this up for me. I must be stupid today.

How is conscription, by it's very nature, NOT forcing someone to join?

That's exactly how I felt as a 19 yr old kid during the Viet Nam era. My choices were:
#1 enlist in the relative safey of the Air Force or Navy
#2 get drafted into the Army for a free ticket to the trenches of Viet Nam.
Either choice assured that I would end up as property of the US government. Not much of a choice.

My logic is no there should not be a draft. However....

If we need people to go in the army, why couldnt we have some of the illegal people who are here sign up. If they sign up for maybe 4 years, serve the country that they love so much, are taught english and are taught how to assimialate into the country, then reward them with a greencard at the end of the years.

Just my two cents worth.
