"Upstate PA?" That's stupid. It just sounds like we're unoriginal and trying to copy NY.

It makes no sense, our state is rectangular.
If they wanted bad ideas, I have those in spades;
how about 'Northeast Pennsylvania: Pennsyl us in.'

It seems silly to me, but it's not totally off base....the Philadelphia area is a significant part of the southeast part of the state like NY metro is in southeast NY state. The show "Cold Case" has referred to "upstate" when they talk about Philly criminals going to prison in Frackville. In Illinois they reverse it and the part not in the Chicago area is called "downstate". Finally, South Carolina also uses the term upstate to refer to it's northernmost part, even though there's not a dominating city in another part of the state.
But I would think technically it would then need to refer to the whole state outside of metro Philly. :-) And I think it's sillier that a newspaper in your own region would call you "upstate", I'd think one in Philly would do that.

Any chance we could lobby to have it changed from 'upstate' to 'up da line?'
I mean think about it, it makes a lot more sense - fishing line, rail line, etc.

My mom used to tell me when the area had inter-city street cars that they would say we are going up or down the line with Scranton being northern terminus. Our politicians could have saved our tax money and had a grade school contest,to pick a name. The kids would have came up with a better name and the contest in itself would be free publicity!!!!!
