Cable or Satellite Dish in Moscow area....
It's getting closer and looking better that our move to the area will be happening. For that, we are very, very excited.
My question today is this - what are our t.v. options in the Moscow area? Do most people get cable, and what kind of cable is offered? Here in Bucks County, we had Comcast - it was always fine, but we switched to Verizon because the deal ended up being really good (and we couldn't pass it up).
Do alot of people have Dish Network or DirectTV? What options can you get with those systems? I know we would like to keep one local Philadelphia station if it's possible (we are a little attached to a few of the newscasters). If we can't, it's no big deal. Also, I like this one public television station broadcast out of Philly - for the Korean dramas they show. If I can't get WYBE through either way, I know the Korean station that does the initial showings broadcasts on some satellite dish in their international offerings.
I could ask our NEPA real estate agent, who's a real doll - but I like the responses I get from this site. Everyone here is just so nice. Makes me really glad we're coming to this area.
Thanks, all - and goodnight for now.
Lisa

Verizon TV isn't available in NEPA. I believe Comcast is the cable company that covers Moscow.....I would possibly switch to satellite, but as a Phillies fan, the only way I can watch games is on cable. CSN Philly is not available on satellite. Comcast cable isn't too bad, I also have my phone and internet through them. But satellite is a little bit cheaper, but like I said, I keep cable for sports.
The phone companies in the area also have TV-internet-phone combo deals. Frontier has a deal with Dish Network, and Verizon has a deal with DirecTV (they don't have Fios available in this area yet).

I have Verizon FIOS now in NoVA, and I must say it's QUITE an improvement over Comcast for a much more affordable price! I pay $90/month for high-speed Internet, high-definition cable (with TONS of channels), an anti-virus package for my desktop PC, and the rental of their high-def. box for my TV. Not bad, considering my parents pay about $150/month or more for that for Comcast back near Scranton. Comcast sucks---they are overpriced due to their monopoly of the Scranton area, they kept giving us "refurbished" high-definition boxes that went down every couple of months, their customer service "professionals" we've dealt with have been very impolite, and on windy days our cable modem would often go down!

That's not a bad price at all. I wish they'd bring Fios to NEPA....its the only other carrier that carries Comcast Sportsnet Philly. Being a Phillies fan, I'm stuck with Comcast. I'm paying about $150 month for Comcast, but that includes internet and home phone service too.

With all of the NIMBYism in NEPA I don't think you'll be seeing Fios for quite some time. Verizon buries all of their fiber-optic lines, and to do this they will tear up driveways, front lawns, flower beds, etc. (but they try to then seamlessly repair the affected area as best they can or will also give you a credit towards getting it back up to snuff). Considering I knew people in the Pittston area who'd mow their lawns bi-daily and even get out there with rulers to check their grass blade height uniformity it's unlikely people would stand for that, despite the much better service and much better pricing of Fios (at which point Comcast would HAVE to reduce their prices a bit to remain competitive or else everyone would switch over). If people here hate the prospect of loft apartments, commuter rail lines, boutiques, etc., then I can only imagine how much groaning and belly-aching would accompany that fiber-optic line installation!

We had Comcast here in Bucks County for about the first 6 years we lived here, and have had Verizon for the past few months. I can't say we were ever really dissatisfied with Comcast, we just heard such good things about Verizon and the deal was great. I want alot of stations, and the ability to get our monthly WWE Pay Per Views. Maybe since we're going to be switching "back" to Comcast we'll get some sort of a deal? I can only hope.....
