If it's that important, people will donate then,
won't they.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre:

-Loss of WYOU
-Loss of ONLY Metropolitan News Chopper
-Impending Loss of WVIA
-No Verizon Fios Service
-Judges Getting Paid to Put Kids in Prison
-Teachers Paying For Their Jobs
-Lack of Internal Control in Professional Settings (i.e. Debit Card Scandal, Scranton Single Tax Office Scandal, etc.)
-High Alcoholism/DUI, Smoking, Obesity (and Correspondingly) Cancer Rates
-Low Educational Attainment
-Debbie Downers
-Higher Homicide Rate in 2009 Than Many Major U.S. Cities
-Rain, Rain, RAIN!
-Gay-Bashing
-Lack of White-Collar Opportunity
-Provincialism/Anti-Transplant Aura
-Oppressive Taxes
-Binge Drinking at Dive Bars/High School Football is "Culture"
-Elderly Population
-Indifference to Severe Urban Sprawl Issues
-Crumbling Infrastructure
-Apathy Towards Historic Preservation, Smart Growth, Mass Transit, and Other Proper Long-Term Planning Initiatives
-Polluted Waterways

Why should I come back from Reston, VA again someday to open my own business venture and bring a few jobs to the area?! I'm not trying to be a wise guy, but now that I'm weighing my "pros" and "cons" lists I'm just not seeing the "value" in trading in Fairfax County for Luzerne County.

We watch WVIA quite a bit. And not just children's programming. We dont' have cable. It isn't a necessity.

What a complete and total fallacy.

You completely don't understand what the issue is here. It's NOT lack of donations, it's lack of gov't funding that is the issue.

lol I had the feeling before that you were a bit too optimistic about this area and sounded like someone who had never lived elsewhere. Now that you've moved out, you sound much more reasonable.

Glad to hear you've found somewhere that makes you happy!

Well, I couldn't get it on Basic or even Basic Plus - I could only get Sprout if I upgraded to the most expensive cable package. There are several channels Blue Ridge doesn't offer unless you pay for the "premium" packages...yet I see some of those "premium package" channels offered on Adams Cable as part of a standard or "standard plus" (one step above basic) package.

Missed the part about the cable stations. I don't believe one should have to pay upwards of $60 per month to gain access to quality television. It's the same as paying for radio IMO.

I think WVIA should look into doing commercials to make up what stupid Rendell has taken away from them.

I will agree with you on one thing, that Rendell is stupid....but I also really do not think that taxpayers need to support TV stations. If there's enough demand for PBS programming, then they should be able to run commercials to pay for their programming. If enough people want PBS to remain commercial-free, then they'll get enough people to pledge money to keep it commercial free. But I don't think I should be forced to pay, as a taxpayer, for TV that I don't watch. My kids do watch some of the PBS kids programming on a cable channel called Sprout, but that is not taxpayer-funded, its owned by Comcast and they partner with PBS for the programming.

As far as state budget cuts, I think they need to start at the top...with the politicians. We don't need Rendell flying around in a private jet....we do not need as many state legislators as we have, and they do not need all the perks they get (per diems, taxpayer-funded SUV's, etc etc).

Isn't it pathetic that Rendell has been FLYING around the state preaching about how broke the state is? Why is there a need to FLY around the state? If the governor is based in Harrisburg, its no more than a 3 hour drive to all corners of the state! Yet we're wasting money to fly our fathead governor around....
