Emergency Room Situation in Wilkes-Barre area
Has anyone had the "pleasure" of using an ER in the area lately? Specifically General Hospital or Geisinger North?
We had to take our son last night to Geisinger North because he had a high fever, shakes, dehydrated and very lethargic. We got there @ 730pm and waited til 1am to get back in the examining area. Just to get registered took close to an hour. Another woman there told us she got there at 330 in the afternoon and we saw her go back at 12midnight.
Why are they closing Geisinger South when it's obvious that it's needed? General Hospital's wait times are even more ridiculous. I went there when I was miscarrying twins and they told me to sit in the waiting area. The triage nurse told me it was going to be at least a 7 hour wait.
Thoughts??

This is due to all of the people who use the ER as their primary care physician.....they need to prohibit people from showing up to the ER with colds and other minor things so that true emergencies can be treated.

Actually I think they need to do what other states do --- have Pediatric Urgent care, Adult Urgent Care and then Emergency Room care.
Some of those people really needed to be seen ASAP (not us) and it was sad to see them languishing there in the ER. Others, like us and the girl with the nail sticking out of her foot were emergencies but not critical, kwim?

We were just at Geisinger (Danville) with our 18 month old Down syndrome son who has a feeding tube problem and can't go to the bathroom... granted he was ok and wasn't a huge emergency but couldn't wait for an appointment since kid was losing half his feed through his feeding tube hole.. got there 12:30PM to the ER and got admitted at 11pm. They said there were busy because of a weekend... I thought hospitals supposed to be less busy on weekends, it didn't seem that bad in the ER like not even half full.
All I can say is thank god for a private room and the tv.

When I went to Wayne Memorial several months ago they tried the same thing with me. I marched into the ER and the nurses were doing puzzles and there was not any patient in there. My daughter was having difficulty breathing. I have seen too much in the medical field and by no means are intimidated by doctors, etc. They brought her in.
Many illegals are getting free health care at our expense in the emergency rooms and they are filled up to capacity. I wonder if you can go to other countries and get free health care?

This is one reason why ER's are so inefficient. Just wait until we have national health care/socialized medicine. It will be far, far worse.

For every link you can provide on the downside of UHC I can provide a link to state otherwise. For every nightmare you can give on medical situations in Canada and Europe I can give you a run for your money on our for profit nightmare in this nation. I've lived it, I see it everyday and I'm a conservative, but no fool and no sucker.

Universal health care is a great idea, in theory. But in reality, would you trust the government with your health and well being? I wouldn't even trust the government to walk the dog, nevermind be in control of the health of my family and myself.

Can't argue with you on that. However, the things I've seen from HMOs, BCBS have not been been pleasant at all.

I feel the government has done such an excellent job with other socialistic endeavors, such as Social Security, that I trust them whole-heartedly with my health care. Given all the money I've paid into Social Security, I should be able to retire without worries. Oh, darn, the beaurocrats screwed that up. Shocker.
I know the health care industry is messed up, we all know it, but UHC is NOT the answer.
The government that governs least is the government that governs best.
