Frank McCourt Right Here in Milford
I was surprised to learn that Frank McCourt has passed away. Even more surprising is that he and his wife had a nice little victorian home on Water Street in Milford. There is a nice article on him in the Dispatch. He wrote Angela's Ashes a top seller and even did a book signing at the local book store in Milford. He also wrote another get book on teachers, although the name doesn't come to mind. He wrote and he would bring his wife a cup of coffee and write his notes while looking out his back yard and then transcribe them on the computer.

Frank McCourt was one of my favorite authors for how powerful the emotions his book derived from me were. I'm shocked to hear he lived in Milford. I honestly had no idea.

Hi ScanBarre,
It must have been one the best kept secrets!!! Do you recall the other book he wrote about referring to his career in teaching? I could not put that book down. Milford would be a great place for writers. Also, Shohola, I believe has a couple of writers too

Pike County, Wayne County, and parts of the Delaware River Valley in NY (i.e. Narrowsburg, Callicoon, Hancock) are becoming more popular with artists, authors, poets, artisans, and all other sorts of talented people. They come out to those areas from their permanent residences in NYC/NJ to "escape" to nature and find their inspiration. I like Milford. I just thought it was a bit too small for my tastes. When I did my photo tour I finished it up in no time and asked myself "That was it? Where's the rest?" Milford gets a lot more press than Honesdale, but I personally favor Honesdale as more of an "Americana" sort of place.
No. Unforunately I haven't read his other book, but I can walk to a Barnes & Noble from my apartment and will have to check it out! I'm sure the price is higher now though. Thank God there's also a library around the corner!

Funny you mention it but Calicoon and Narrowsburg are quite artsy. The entire area is picturesque for artists, writers, etc. LOL, I ask myself the same thing when I see the tourists in Milford. However, it is very quaint and years ago it was very quiet. I favor Honesdale as well, it reminds me of the all american great place to live in. But, I'll tell you it was quite a secret that he had a house in Milford. What a talent he had and he will be missed.

The singer Vanessa Carlton is from Milford. It is a nice little town.
But Honesdale was the inspiration of "Winter Wonderland". Honesdale has a charm of it's own.

Yes, in fact Vanessa's Mom is a well known piano teacher in Shohola and got her daughter involved with music and voice at a very young age. I had no idea that Winter Wonderland was inspired by Honesdale. How awesome is that!!

Yes. I knew that about Vanessa Carlton. My ex was from Lehman Township (Bushkill Area).
Just thinking of Honesdale always makes me homesick for NEPA. The festivals. The tidy multi-story brick buildings lining Main Street. The historic churches along aptly-named Church Street. The motorists who will actually stop to let people cross the street. Elegante Pizza. The beautiful Wayne County Courthouse. Sigh.... Here in NoVA people don't care about stuff like that. They'd more quickly pave over Central Park in Downtown Honesdale for a new Wal-Mart! IDIOTS!

That is really cool, thanks for sharing that. I think an interesting thread would be "Famous People in NEPA" BTW. Vanessa's Mom works with young children. I am thinking about getting my daughter evaluated by her. A couple of weeks ago she just started playing the keyboard, and I really amazed me.
