Does it really matter? I'm finding that when people move they are now opting not to get a land line at all. When people tell me their phone number it often has nothing to do with where they currently live. I was surprised it made the newspaper.

So do I. Is it bad that for some very strange reason I remember that the area code changed in April of 1995?

with the age of cell phones every house raised how many numbers they have. hell, there are 3 area codes you can reach me at, one of them being 570. i wonder how this will affect those of us with "phantom" numbers in that area.

I'm personally in favor of assigning a new area code to the four-county Pocono area (Wayne/Pike/Monroe/Carbon) with the rest of "the 570" remaining unscathed. Any proposal to split the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area right down the middle (I think one option was even to have Pittston/West Pittston in different area codes) is just asinine---why would you want to FURTHER divide an area that needs to UNIFY in order to redevelop economically? The Poconos are the only rapidly-growing part of the area these days (Scranton/W-B and North Central PA are both growing slowly) so it stands to reason that the growth there is primarily the reason why we've run out of phone numbers in this relatively new area code so quickly.

The Poconos should definitely have their own area code separate from the rest of NEPA. A New Jersey area code should fit perfectly.
