East Stroudsburg, PA
We are looking at the possibility "some day" of moving to East Stroudsburg, PA. We would really like to live on 5 acres or more. We have several pets and want to make sure there are no restrictions on domesticated pets..and if we chose to have a few other animals (like outdoor barn animals) there wouldn't be a problem.
We'd like to know (in general) what it is like to live there. Do you feel safe? Is there a lot of crime?
Thanks!!

I don't know that you'd find 5 acres in East Stroudsburg..i searched the mls and came up with a 3.14 acre property listing... Remax of the Poconos -- Search Pocono Area Land Listings
If you want that much property, and may want some barn animals, you might want to consider another area. I use that remax sight for quick searches, just enter the amount of acreage you are looking for, choose Monroe County (to get hits in the same county as East Stroudsburg)

I have lived in East Stroudsburg for the past 19 years of my life, so I will give you my insight. You will most likely not find 5 acres in the town of Eastburg. There are however large lots quite near there in other towns such as Marshall's Creek, Broadheadsville, places in Price Township, Bushkill, etc. All of these are within 5-10 minutes of East Stroudsburg.
As for the barn animals, that is not a problem in these places either. I know many people, even some of my friends, that own horses, cows, chickens, etc.
I feel quite safe here in the town. Crime has risen slightly in the past 5 years or so, but I still feel fine leaving my car unlocked in my driveway. Have no problems walking around at night Don't get me me wrong, there are some streets you don't want to be on (aka 2nd St in Stroudsburg.), but most of them are fine.
In general, if you enjoy the outdoors, and enjoy doing things outdoors, its a great place to live. There are tons of things to do outside (mt. biking, kayaking, fishing, etc).
Your best bet would be to call a real estate agent in the area, tell them what your looking for and tell them how far away from the actual town you would be willing to live. They will find you what you are looking for. Good luck

The land you would want would probably be in Brodheadsville, Kressgeville, Sciota and that general area.
Stroudsburg looked great today while driving though. The race track owner gave a million dollars to improve the downtown and it was lovely.
There were flowers blooming on every street post. The store fronts were all redone......many were walking through the town. It is becoming a grand place again......

East Stroudsburg is the most urban town in the Poconos. It's actually the center of a "micropolitan" area now. The area Summering mentioned is where I live--the West End. It's suburban/rural, and it's not difficult to find acreage here. From Brodheadsville, East Stroudsburg is about a 20 minute drive.
Stroudsburg is so nice now. People walking, all those full sidewalk tables at the restaurants, a nice selection of galleries, the Sherman Theater... We have a lot of great reasons to go down to Main St. these days!!

I live in East Stroudsburg (Middle Smithfield)..there are lots several acres large that would be very nice. I've been here 2 yrs and do the Martz (local commuter bus line) to NYC everyday. It's been a transition, E'burg & Stroudsburg are nice towns... one thing to consider is that coming form NY or NJ you will eventually run into bias from "locals" who resent the "transplants". Not everyone is like that but there is a underlying resentment due to the increase in taxes, crime, agressive driving etc. over the last several years due to the increase in people moving there. Keep an open mind and do not judge the area by a weekend visit. I love the quiet peaceful area i live and my neigbors are mostly transplants as well and have adjusted nicely. There is crime, not by big city standards mind you.. but there are areas that have seemingly more crime than others (Mt.Pocono for example). School taxes are my only complaint...RIDICULOUS amount of taxes for townships that have overspending issues. Research what your school taxes will be (yes even if you do not have children you will pay them) for the area you are going to live. Forget about earning a decent wage as this is a tourist community that hasn't caught up to the rest of the tri-state area as far as wages are concerned...if this is not an issue you should be fine.

Yeah well I live in Bethlehem PA currently...the most "LOVELY" memory is of my neighbor who told me that she was sick of those "D" New Jersians coming over here for cheap real estate. She stated it drove the prices up for her POOOOOOOOR children who now couldn't afford to buy in their home town.
So I'm used to the attitude.
Not sure which would be better, continue to fix up this place and live here forever. OR fix it up to sell and then move to the country.
Thanks for all the information everyone. I'd love to live on a couple acres so that snotty neighbors wouldn't be such a problem---we will see!

Now, that I've sold my home, in my never-ending search for a cool place to live (going north again), I'm looking at Northeastern PA.
I'm willing to rent for a while.
I'd like to share a house. I'm a considerate, amenable woman who's a tech writer. I want to land in an area that will transition me in a subtle way, so a house share would be very nice.
Also, can we reflect more on the area insofar as nice areas that are clean, safe, and quiet?
Eventually, I would travel to Jersey, or New York for work, or perhaps if there's work for tech writers in PA, I'd take it first.
I have a Border Collie mix, weighing in a 42 LB. I can provide references and would oblige you a background check. Please let me know by private PM.
Thank you.
