I wouldn't have minded the wide beaches if I didn't have a couple of little kids with me...

Atlantic City is probably the closest.

I love Ocean City, MD and Fenwick. That whole area, actually! We weren't able to go this year. I'll be in mourning until we get there next summer :-)

The nearest beach is Long Branch, NJ, though. Sandy Hook's Parkway exit is closer, but you have to wait through 15 miles of traffic lights. Long Branch is a clearer shot. The town itself isn't so hot for the most part, but the new waterfront tourist district is nice.

The nearest beach with a commercial boardwalk & amusements is Point Pleasant. It's a really nice, family-oriented boardwalk with none of the sleeze of Seaside Heights (which I also love -- the sleeze is part of its charm :-).

Yup, keep going all the way down to Wildwood (or to MD is ever better !!), makes all the closer beaches that much more enjoyable !!

Well if you want to kill a Saturday, you can try Red Bank/Sea Bright NJ.

Red Bank is a nice little town that has all sorts of different shops - think
500 of Lacakwanna project but for block and blocks.

About 15 minutes from Red Bank is Sea Bright beach, which is more
residential than commercial, and fairly relaxing even when busy.

I recommend 'Rum Runners' in Sea Bright for seafood.

I don't know what kind of age group you're talking here, but the Ink Well
in (I think) Monmouth (only a couple minutes away from Sea Bright) is the
stop for the young or young at heart. The have a full menu, but the only
thing I've ever gotten there is coffee and maybe dessert.

I think they used to have local punk bands on occasion, not sure about
these days. There's a place right on the beach at Sea Bright that is more
of a middle-age spot but it's still a good time.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations on beaches close to PA. I will definately try them out next time. I decided to go to O.C. Maryland & it was terrible! It's a very overcrowded beach, no parking, not handicapped accessible at all like they say they are, & the people were very rude they would just walk right over top of you. Will not be going there again....

The part of the beach in OC that we would go to everyday wasn't overcrowded (near Somerset St.), and the hotel we stayed at was across the bay and provided shuttle service to the beach and boardwalk, so parking wasn't a problem. Actually found the people there to be very friendly for the most part.

Rehoboth, DE beach is nice. They have a very inexpensive fun park for the kids. Small, but enjoyable. The town is cute for parents to enjoy. Nice restaurants. Not all that far of a drive.
For more peacefulness.....Bethany Beach further up.
