Hello All.
I'm brand new to this board and learning a lot about PA thanks to your insightful comments. I am a Virginia girl, born and bred, but my husband is looking at the possibility of a job with a very big employer in Swiftwater, PA. We have young children, and would love to find a community that has a small-town feel with great schools (wouldn't everyone!) My husband doesn't mind a drive, though would prefer to keep it 45 min or less. I'd appreciate any thoughts. (I'm still studying the PA map -- it is all new to me!)
Thanks!

You may want to look at Barrett Township, if you'd prefer Monroe County. If searching for homes, the "towns" would be Cresco, Canadensis, Mountainhome, Skytop, or Buck Hill Falls. Just keep in mind that some Cresco address lie in Paradise Township and Price Township, and some Canadensis addresses actually lie in Greene Township in Pike County.

I worked as a police officer there for almost 7 years. Very much a small town feel. While it is growing a bit, it is far removed from the population explosion that the majority of Monroe County has experienced. It also lacks a major thoroughfare, so there is no major development like in Pocono Township (Tannersville, Swiftwater, etc).

My only concern for Barrett is the soon-to-be-opened casino, which may very well lead to a spike in development.

As for the schools, well......I'm a local and graduated from Stroudsburg. I've never been a fan of Pocono Mt. School District, which is where Barrett residents attend. The elementary schools are decent, but I wouldn't even consider it when I bought my house because of the eventuality of my kids going to a PM high school.

If you're willing to move a bit further, I would recommend my neck o' the woods: Gouldsboro. I live in the very southern tip of Wayne County, less than 3 miles from I-380 (although I prefer Route 611) and can be in Swiftwater in 20 minutes or so.

I have been extremely impressed with the North Pocono School District, the area is very much a small town (~1500 people). Plus, I have a two houses for sale here.

Thank you, BravoSix. That is very helpful info. Gouldsboro sounds lovely. I understand that several folks make the commute from Lehigh Valley, so I guess that might be an option as well. I really appreciate you sharing your experience and your thoughts on the schools (North Pocono vs. Pocono Mountain.) It definitely give us a place to start looking!
