How can residents change the way cops are treated in Scranton?
Discuss. IMO, not much can be done until the mayor is ousted.

Agreed. You are correct. But, I don't want to turn this into a bash the mayor thread, some might get touchy. I believe this to be true and no one is going to change my mind about it.

One way we can all personally change how they are treated is to respect them and teach our children the same. BTW...a little thing I have always done is attempt to always use Police Officer as opposed to "cop"...I dunno know it just sounds more professional and respectful. IMHO

The police and fire personell in the city have little morale left after being dumped on for years by the current administration and the local newspaper, A simple "good job" or a smile and a nod from the public is more appreciated than you could imagine..

How can you cange the way cops are treated? By whom? The residents in general or the 'machine' aka administration?
The first suggestion would be to show the SPD and the SFD a little respect and not bash them for doing their jobs, first and foremost actually. Think back to when the woman was shot and everyone got on the 'bash the SPD' wagon until the facts were laid out for the public to see that it WAS a justifiable shooting.
The SPD have been working without a pay raise while Doherty has been in office. No, I am NOT mayor bashing, just stating a fact. I honestly feel bad for the SPD, having to work under those conditions - no pay raise, always under scrutiny, having to provide their own vehicles for the most part, kind of kills the morale wouldn't you think?
Most people in general have an aversion to police in general and only call them when they are in trouble. Then the police are 'ok'. If this same person is caught doing something wrong or illegal, the police automatically are then labeled (insert your own curse words here). Police are the peace makers, the domestic dispute problem solvers, the ones called when a parent cannot control their own child, etc - the list is endless.
Perhaps more respect for them is indeed called for and should be taught at home to children from the get go. Teens don't respect the police and this stems from the parents disdain for the officers.
As JQP stated, a simple gesture, smile or nod will suffice to let the SPD know that they are doing a good job and that you actually do care and applaud their efforts to keep YOU safe with what they have to work with.
