It is frustrating but really, it usually does not bother me. i am used to people thinking I am some shiksta stay at home crazy woman! Then people actually have a conversation with me and realize I am not some bumbling idiot---I am well educated, well informed, and I really do do some research before I offer any views.
This was a little weird, but I vented and I am over it already :0). I wanted to say thanks for the "validation" though.

Unfortunately people are losing there basic trust in him. Not the trust in the job he does (ie. bad decisions) but him as a man.Even those that hated GWB would not have done this. This is unheard of for any president (except Nixon) and does not bode well for his presidency. You can not lead a people when you don't have their trust. He went from an overwhelming 70% approval to what is probably going to be the most divisive presidency ever. If he would have just led and not focused on his agenda, people would have followed

Back on topic guys. Or, we can just wait and hear this controversial speech - " Hey kids work hard in school!" and talk about Obama on this forum where the posters aren't nearly as nice - http://www.city-data.com/forum/polit...l-address.html

I'm sorry but when people start shouting about how Obama is trying to get kids "on his side" because he wants to talk about education that DOES lead me to believe they have not done their research.

Yes--there are different opinions about the Civil War or The War Between the States--I know because I grew up in Pa and have lived in Mississippi for decades.
But that is not history-that is opinion--it is the historical documents, scholarly research and critical examination of the event that is culled for the textbooks and history books. It is the very reason kids go to school--to learn what the best research, documentation, and authority can tell them about their history--not biased folklore.
Your point is the very reason for school curriculums that don't have the biased assumptions of a particular region-family-or group--kids need objective presentation of facts, theories, assumptions. and controversy---or you can kiss this democracy good-bye.
And it is the Mason-Dixon by the way.

I know this is OT but a great book about just how skewed our History classes are is:
Amazon.com: Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong (9780743296281): James W. Loewen: Books
I do think this kind of ties in with the original topic because, IMO, it is an example of how people in authority try to change history or hide certain aspects of history simply because they do not agree with what happened. Or wish to give someone else credit for what happened.

This is what I was talking about in my post from last night:
From a CNN article about the speech:
Quote:
The president's speeches tend to be [about] what's wrong with the country and what can we do to fix it," said Bill Hogsett, a parent from Dallas, Texas.
"I believe this is the greatest country on Earth, and I try to teach that to my children. ... I don't want them hearing that there's a fundamental flaw with the country and the kids need to go forward to fix it."
|
In school speech, Obama says education key to country's future - CNN.com
It just amazes me that so many people seem to want to bury their head in the sand. Yes, this is a great country but we do have our problems. Furthermore, Obama isn't addressing ANY of that in his speech to schoolchildren.
