How do you figure? Why should he have been aware of something that ACORN was obviously hiding?
Most of America knows about this (except ABC anchor Charlie Gibson!). Casey, who was elected to the position of a United States Senator, has an entire staff available to keep him up-to-date on events happening in the country, especially events that might lead to him being called upon to vote for or against legislation. I found the following threads in about five minutes. Apparently ACORN isn't able to hide it very well anymore:

Ummm...IMHO...because he is a SENATOR, and they are SUPPOSE to have the pulse of what they support also simply put: he is not everyone else and has resources at his disposal that I only dream of.
We're not talking about the original approval of funding, there was a vote to discontinue funding based on recent events that have been brought to light,
and Casey voted against that measure.
Anyone in his position should have been well aware of what was going on at
that point in time. Wouldn't a vote to discontinue gov't funding cause you to
ask around a little? The vote was 83-7, so obviously some people did their
homework.
