I'm from the western part of PA and don't know much of the area around Scranton. However, I googled "Scranton PA Skiing" and got the following three hits:

www.skimontage.com
www.theskicorner.com
www.poconovacations.com/poconos-skiing.aspx

They are very close to Scranton. Hope this helps

By the way, if you come out west, We have Blue Knob State Park that offers skiing along Seven Springs and Hidden Valley resorts. Lots of people from Pittsburgh and west-central PA go here. They are excellent!!

Cross Country skiing and skiing are tow totally different sports!!!!!
I don't know where you would find any cross country skiing here. The private community that I live in offers it and has the equipment to rent but I don't know of anywhere else that would have it.

There is a groomed trail around a beautiful golf course at Pocono Manor. They will rent you cross-country skis there if you don't have. If you don't need to rent skis, you have a lot of options in the PA state park system--Promised Land in Greentown would probably be relatively close for you. Then, there is the continuously developing rails-to-trails system starting in Susquehanna County.
One thing you will never lack in NEPA is an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities.

I'm actually a big cross country ski enthusiast. There are no cross country ski resorts with groomed trails in the immediate vicinity. The closest is High Point Ski Center (http://www.xcskihighpoint.com/) which is about an hour from Scranton, just past Milford off of route 84. Crystal Lake (http://www.crystallakeskicenter.com/) is far superior but it's nearly 2 hours away, near Williamsport. It's set in a secluded wilderness of 1,000 acres, 1,500 - 2,000 feet high. There are many miles of trails. I wish we had places that were closer, and I had actually posted in this forum a few months ago regarding this topic:
