I could not agree more. Scranton is going nowhere, it's evident to the people who live here. Projects that never see the light of day are the norm here. Most see the reality. There are a few pipe dreamers who wear the rose-colored glasses and that's fine, whatever gets you through the day.

In contrast I pay $1,105/month for a 1-BR unit in the far-out suburbs of DC (much, much higher rents closer to the city proper).
I wish I could afford to live in the lofts. Even with professional jobs in this area, that's not necessarily dirt cheap. Salaries in the DC area are up to 3x what they are here for the same work.

The gap widens once you're into the higher level of your career track for certain, but entry-level salaries in DC aren't THAT much higher than they are in NEPA. I started out at $40,000. I probably would have started at around $35,000 as an accountant in NEPA. Meanwhile I'm paying $1,200/month for a 1-BR apartment in deep suburbia in VA vs. MUCH cheaper EVERYTHING in NEPA.

I have to tell you not everything in NEPA is cheaper. Housing costs certainly are, but I found a few things to actually cost more here, and the "sales" are never as good as they are on L.I. It's weird things that cost more, water, haircuts and food prices. Not sure why but they are significantly higher here.

I should have qualified it to say mens haircuts. My husband and son use to pay about 6 bucks each at the barber shop. Cheap haircut prices lend to higher tipping! The same man had been cutting my sons hair since he was a baby! Here it is at least 15 bucks a pop and neither of them had a decent cut until my eldest son's gf starting doing their hair.
I had much better luck finding a cut and colorist whom I love and do fantastic work. But, now my sons gf also does mine. I would rather pay her 50 bucks then 100 every 3 weeks. I have premature WHITE ( not gray) hair! Too many years of living in the fast lane I guess! lol
