Olympus is in Center Valley, not Allentown. About 10 minutes from Allentown, but nevertheless, we get to claim it.

Marcelle, I wonder if Wegmans would work for you. It's a wonderful grocery store chain and there is one located in the northwest corner of Allentown. The reason I thought of it is that it's always voted as one of the very best employers in the area and if you settle in Summit Hill you wouldn't have to drive through all of Allentown to get to it. Another place that just occured to me is Lehigh County Community College. It's in Orefield, just North of Allentown. I know a couple of people that work there and they do hire part time people in clerical jobs. http://www.lccc.edu/default.aspx?pageid=57 (broken link) . LCCC has a small campus in Tamaqua too.

Agree that Tamaqua is kind of a dicey town. Not really bad but very blue collar. I'm guessing that they don't get a lot of newcomers up there. I wouldn't live in Tamaqua but would be a good location for a job from Summit Hll.

Allentown's largest employer is Lehigh Valley Hospital. https://www.healthcaresource.com/leh...categories.cfm Good location just off of Route 78.

Its about 45 minutes from summit hill to allentown. 95% of the time--no traffic on the Pennsylvania TPK 476

As for playgroups, I just chill with all the stay-at homes on my street.
Look into www.poconocommuter.com and ask about playgroups--they have all the info.

Default know about Allentown area

My girlfriend and i want to move to Allentown. Not like in the middle of the bustle but on the "outskirts." Is that the term for just right out of the city. We live in South Carolina, and know that our descriptions may be different.
Do you have any photos of the area? How is it there?

Question A Question for Molly...

My hubby and I currently live in Macungie, PA (lehigh Valley about 10 minutes from Emmaus and 20 from Allentown). We're looking to move North East of here and my husband is looking to get transferred in his job to allentown. We heard about Monroe county and wondered what it was like. We have one small child (toddler) and one on the way. So schools and low crime rate are imp. Where can we move in either Monroe county or even Pike county that is relatively 45 minutes to allentown? I've heard about high crime in the Poconos (gangs...yikes!) and we're worried about it.
We love rural areas, about an acre or so per house is nice. Right now we live in a community where the houses are on top of eachother and there's always tension because of it.
Thanks so much for your help and expertise!

ok lets clear this up. Yes there are gang in the poconos, but there are gangs EVERYWHERE!! I do know that there has been an increase in crime in a gated development in Tobyhanna call Pocono Country Place. do a search for that neighborhood (aka PCP) at PoconoRecord.com. I have young children and live in the town of Reeders, near camelback ski mountain. we love our area and have close to 2 acres of land. The schools campus are breathtaking views of mountains and I like the small town rural area too. There are many homes up for RESALE. I strongly recommend that rather than building. Many homes are only 5 years old or LESS. Look into one of those. I wouldn't move in the stroudsburg area or tobyhanna/mt. pocono area. But do look at the MLS listing I've posted http://www.poconokey.com/Search_20_the_20_MLS.html for homes. If you find your dream home and not sure of the neighborhood/town. Just ask me. good luck.

Can people commute to New York city who don't have cars? I know of a lot of New York EMT's and paramedics who work in New York and have bought houses in Tobyhanna or the Pocono area. I have a car but I can't drive into the city because of parking.
