Wild Acres is also a wonderful lake community in Dingmans Ferry. There are 7 lakes!

Default Thinking about Moving

Hi I am thinking about relocating my family to the poconos but I am unsure now. I read a comment on one of these forums that stated that African-americans get the cold shoulder from Northeast Pennsylvania residents.

I would be coming from a affluent suburb of Maryland and truly love the scenic views of the area and the tranquility of the Poconos. Can you tell me if that is a true statement about how residents feel about minorities?

Thanks.

Hi Molly, I appreciate your comment. My husband and I would love to move to the area, and I would love for our 7-year old son to have wonderful Tom Sawyer-like adventures roaming in his yard, surrounded by woods and nature. Where are the best elementary schools located - and I mean high performing schools? Also, would you consider the poconos a diverse area?

Hi MollyMe,

We have been traveling from NC to NYC every Saturday and would really like to settle down in PA soon.

Is the area sandwiched between 80 and 33, and south of Pocono Creek nice? I don't think it is Cherry Valley. It includes Brislin Rd, Blue Ridge Dr, High Terrace Rd etc. I don't know where is Cherry Valley or Blue Mountain Lake. Is there heated indoor pool some where nearby?

Thanks,
M-Y

Cherry Valley you can get to from route 33 but it is the area behind where the Stroudsmore Inn is located. Heading out that way.
Blue Mountain Lake is off of 447 just past Haltermans Auto Sales and a road heading North........
So they are two different areas completely.
Blue Mt has an outdoor pool, and lake. I don't think an indoor pool.It is a community development.
Cherry Valley is an area in Stoud, if you wanted a pool it would be in your own yard.
It is not a community.

Thanks, Summering. I have been looking at Mapquest and trying to figure out where things are. I do see a lake called Blue Mountain Lake off 447. Is there where Blue Mountain community is?

I see that there is a YMCA on Main Street in Stroudsburg. That will do.

I look forward to moving to PA and get to know people and places there. We just need to find a home to move to!

Thanks,
M-Y

H M-Y I lived over that way, but I am forgetting the exact turn. You take 447 past Mr Z's grocery store, past Haltermans, then I think it is two streets up on the right.
If I'm not mistaken there is an autobody shop at the turn. It climbs upwards and then Blue Mt. is on your left. There use to be a way in( to see the homes and lake) from the far right area........(sh) because now they did put a guard and a stopping area there in the left side gate area.
IT might be closed now( the round about way to get in ). That is how we got in to see the lake. It was nice in there.
The homes are newish, because the development is not all that old. I liked the pool area, and the lake is pretty. Just a small lake but, nice to have anyhow.
Most likely, you probably have found it if your looking off of 447. The road to turn up, is before you come to the intersection of 191. 191 would lead you to town and the YMCA. We use to take the twin babies there to learn to swim, now they are pros!!! We took them in the wintertime..........Whew, cold.
I think Blue Mt Lakes is a friendly place. My daughters knew a few NJ people who moved there. If you take Cherry Lane by the Anolomink Post Office and follow it........you can get to Smugglers Restaurant area,..........and onto 611 closer to Home Depot, Lowes, Kohls, without having to travel the main roads at all..........
Sounds like a good area for you to check out. Best of Luck.
There are some evening classes too at the Vo Tech that are fun and enjoyable.

Thank you so much Summering for your information! I'll print it out and take it with me to PA next time.

I have read about Saylorsburg, Tannersville and Reeders. Perhaps I'll squeeze in time to visit these places too. Any suggestions for any particular community or residential area to check out or to avoid?

Oh yes, another issue that came up is the mine subsidence. How are we supposed to check this out before we buy a house?

Thank you SO SO much!

M-Y

The road that runs to the side of Smugglers Cove restaurant leads to 715 which can be followed thru Reeders area. It will end in Brodheadsville. Saylorsburg has some nice homes That is not far off of 33 and in off of Meixsel Valley Road are some great homes on good streets.I can't think of a development that I loved in Tannersville, there was one that was ok in Scotrun further up.You can get from one place to the other easy enough.......get a good google map.
Mines, I do not see an issue with that here in this area. Forks, Palmer........yes those people carry mine insurance. Some homes in Palmer have sunk, or their yards have.
Further North........Carbondale possiably, old mining towns that are north.
I know of no one here who carried this insurance. My kids do in Forks........but that is close to Palmer.
Best of luck........gotta run..........Summering
