Hello.

Members "ConorsDad" and "WeLuvPA" both reside in Scranton and have children currently enrolled in the city. ConorsDad lives in Hyde Park in the city's west side, which has its own high school, whereas WeLuvPA lives in Lower Green Ridge, which is the majority of the city that is serviced by the much larger Scranton High School. I've heard great things about West Scranton High School and mixed reviews about Scranton High School, which is only a few years old but has been rumored to be overcrowded.

The city is home to Scranton Prep High School, which is probably one of the best private high schools in the region. There is also a Roman Catholic high school in the city's downtown, along with a Jewish school, and various other private and parochial schools.

I live in the suburbs, so I'd probably send a message to both WeLuvPA and ConorsDad to ask them personally for their input.

ok I understand that this is pa and all, but damn seeing atleast 30 deer in one area at one time is alittle overwhelming. i dont know maybe it the city in me.
I know that we can handle atleast $5,000 in taxes. are there any communities (total opposite from saw creek) you may recommend?
oh, and can anybody give me a list of builders to stay away from?

wow thanx Molly for the info on the crime in saw creek, that was so helpful. something was surely bothering me bout the community. very anxious to visit sawcreek on monday. however i am a first time home buyer, an very unfamiliar to pa. but sure that this is the place to build our future home. just trying to learn the area and different communities to raise my daughter. It seems as though that it can take years before your home can gain equity unlike nyc. Molly is it true that if you live in an community where a home is going through forclosure, this can bring down the value on your home? i just want to get out of this city, in a nice community,where the taxes are affordable. I dont have a clue, need help bad.

Wow! first of all you don't know anything about what i do and don't know. I didn't come on here for your smart ass comments i came on here for advise. I have been doing research on several states for the past 9 months so i know plenty about what it is that I'm looking for that is why i made the comment about finding the state i want to move to, because from what i have "researched" Pennsylvania has what I'm looking for. What i was asking you was for some specific areas other than what i already know, to start looking into. I know most of what i need to know about where the crime is from what i have "researched". Stay away from Tobyhanna, Mt.Pocono, gated communities, PCP, Westfall twp, matamoras, etc. I've researched prices and anything else that could be researched. I came on here to see if there were any other places besides the ones i had considered, that i should look into. So thanks for nothing, and know your facts before you start talking ****.

Right, I wouldn't recommend it either..........
Homes, like always in the history of sales, seem to gain rather then plunge.
But, if you go into a community that the people don't upkeep, or that has forclosures, Yes.......you won't get the equity you should have gotten.
Just picture the home forclosing next to you ,,at say 100,000 your know your home is worth 160,000. How will you get that, when someone will go looking for a deal and see the "wonderful price" on the forclosure?

Thanks MollyMe, That info was very helpful !! And yes I was too excited with the low home prices and assumed the taxes were the same ??? I am very shocked?? but it does not compare to NY they are overboard??

Another question: I do not want to offend anyone in NEPA but I went into a forum here and found comments about discrimination towards hispanics?? Is that true??

This is most prevalent in Greater Hazleton, which was in the national media spotlight for a while for its tough stances on illegal immigration. While I'm also no fan of illegal immigrants, I opposed the legislation because many LEGAL Hispanic residents in the city were also being targeted with prejudice and hatred because the Caucasian residents of the city only looked at their skin color and couldn't seem to distinguish between "legal" and "illegal." In theory Mayor Barletta had a great idea, but he should have likewise foreseen all of the anti-Hispanic backlash that it would inevitably cause towards LEGAL immigrants as well.

Monroe County, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates, has become an absolute melting pot of people from all walks of life, and you likely would NOT encounter any hostility there for being Hispanic. Residents in Luzerne County, overall, tend to be very provincial, intolerant, and fearful of change or social-progression, whether one is African-American, Hispanic, gay, Arabic, or whatever (I should know as I've lived here for the past 21 years and have experienced some of the prejudice first-hand).

I'd personally welcome you with open arms to the area. Avoid Hazleton, and you should likewise avoid a lot of the anti-Hispanic backlash.

Glad to know you DID do a lot of homework. Check out areas north of mt. pocono like Moscow--very nice there too.
