I have to wonder how people can root for the Yankees...its like rooting for Bill Gates to win the lottery.

Or its like rooting for your childhood team....
The Yankees earn all their money, and spend it...they dont print fake money off of a press or do anything illegal... The Yankees are the most recognizable North American Sports Franchise, and receive revenues from all across the world in merchandise. They are making their money like any business would, and spending it in the best interest of the franchise....
The only reason to complain about the yankees using money they earn, would be because other teams are not capable of being as successful as the Yankees, not as a team, but as a WORLD-Class Franchise.
Sure the Yanks have the highest payroll.. they make the most money.. but its not like Philly isnt spending alot of money.. 7th Highest payroll in baseball.
Yanks spent on the top 3 free agents, correct.. but from 2008 to 2009, Yankees CUT DOWN nearly $8 million dollars... where the Phillies INCREASED theirs by $15 million.... so that $113,000,000 payroll the phillies have.. is still way larger then Florida's $36,000,000 payroll.
The rest of the country (not just phillies, mets, or red sox fans - who all have high payrolls) need to stop making excuses, the Marlins have proven you do not need to have a high payroll to win the world series.

It's too easy to root for the Yankees because they're always competitive somehow because they buy their teams, to me that's like rooting for a corporation, not a team. It's not even special anymore because they have won so many. Last year it was only the Phillie's second and it probably meant more to you the fan because it happens so infrequently. You're right, MLB should step in a put in a salary cap to even out the competitive balance. Since the Bankees didn't even make the playoffs last year, if they weren't allow to "buy" the players that they did, they might have missed it again and would have to build their team through the draft instead of relying solely on free agency.

Yes, I completely and totally agree. The Yankees are more like a corporation than a sports team anymore.

reverse roles...
lets say its the phillies are the team with the highest payroll in baseball ... all hypothetical... do you NOT root for your team based on that reason? Would you be complaining about how your team has the highest payroll in baseball? Of course thats not the case.. your going to root for your team regardless.
would you be complaining if your favorite team won the world series 26 times? no, you would not.
but because your team doesnt have the market and success that new york does.. that makes yankee fans wrong for rooting for their team?
A salary cap will even things out sure, but really, by how much.. big time players want to play in New York. they want the spotlight...they're still not going to want to play for kansas city and oakland. the big teams will still be in NY, PHI, Chicago, LA, and Boston.
for every Yankee Bandwagoner... theres 100 peple who were born rooting for the yankees... I liked the yankees before i could count change... money has nothing to do with why many yankee fans like the yankees.
but because its someone elses team, not yours, you despise them.. cool... just understand that these are silly reasons to not root for a team, or to think its too easy..

I saw a great sign at the game last night: "George, this trophy is not for sale!"
Anyways, after last night's win, as long as the Phils take it one game at a time and don't look ahead, this is anyone's series. Win tomorrow night and its all even. I have to say the thought of Cole Hamels starting game 7 scares me. I also think Brad Lidge needs to be kept far away from the mound.
I predict a well-rested Pedro is the Yankees' "daddy" in game 6 and it comes down to game 7.

I still think the Yankees have the edge over other teams with their financial resources. Other teams with lower payrolls like Arizona and Florida have won the World Series. That's why it was so sweet back in 2001 and 2003 when those teams whipped the Yankees and won it all, but I believe that was an aberration those years and doesn't normally happen. I just don't like the fact that the Yankees feel it's their destiny and right to win it every year because they are who they are. There are 29 other teams that deserve a fair shot at it too.
As for the series, the Phillies now have the momentum going into Game 6. I still think it's going to be awfully hard to win two in a row in the Bronx, but it can be done, this Yankee team has some weak spots to their game and if the Phillies can exploit that, then they will repeat.

Of course the Yankees have a big advantage over teams but they also do it with home grown talent..
Was it Ok when the Rangers were buying everything in the NHL???
Did you not root for them because they were spending more money then other team in the NHL??

That's why I like the NHL now with the salary cap, the Rangers can't act like fools like they used to and buy free agents that are past their prime. Yes, I still rooted for them years ago when they spent like drunken sailors, but somehow it never seemed to work for them. I like them much better now because they are forced to build their team through the draft and I think they're much better for it.

Florida won by spending millions to build a team and then sold all the contracts the next year.
