Default Finding an Apartment 30 min between Scranton PA and Binghamton NY

I have been trying very hard to find an apartment somewhere roughly 30 min between Scranton (where I go to school) and Binghamton (where I work), but I've been totally out of luck in finding something.
I've tried locally at Scranton and unfortunately the places are either extremely overpriced in the Greenridge area or places that I would feel unsafe living in.
Another blunder is I have severe allergies, so I must have an uncarpeted living space and one that is smoke/pet free. My spouse and I are both students and can only afford up to $600 a month rent.
I have tried the scranton paper, the binghamton paper, rent.com, and I'm turning here for help. Any suggestions? Thanks! Please feel free to email me too! (yakuzie@gmail.com)

There is basically nothing between those two cities. Not to be sarcastic, but you might want to consider changing jobs.

I went to mapquest to check out the various communities between Binghamton and Scranton. Yeah, there are no towns of any size but maybe that's not a bad thing. If you like rural living, you could probably find a spacious apartment in a safe neighborhood for a cheap price. Check out the small towns along the way. Montrose, PA, a town of 1,500 is 46 miles from Scranton and 28 miles from Binghamton. Btw, are you a graduate student or undergraduate? Just curious.

I had forgotten about Montrose, and I will have to check it out! :-) I'm an undergrad, and my spouse is about 1 year from his masters. :-) We're roughly the same age, I just took time off from school for a while to work. So in a sorta reply to the other entry, changing jobs when I have a secure job that pays well enough to get me by isn't an option right now.

I'll second the vote for Montrose. There was just a tornado that passed near the town yesterday, and I haven't heard yet if there was a lot of damage or not (we seem to be getting a lot of tornadoes around Scranton lately!) It is a cute, quiet, safe town and would probably be your best bet for a rental, as it's the largest town between Scranton and Binghamton. You could also probably find some small cottage rentals nearer to Elk Mountain Ski Resort, which is just north of Forest City (another small town to consider for apartments). Most of the I-81 corridor in Susquehanna County is rural and serene; you won't have much luck finding anything but farms and single-family homes in places like Harford, Dimock, Kingsley, Gibson, Lenox, New Milford, etc. Check into Montrose, Forest City, and the possibility of cottage rentals near Elk Mountain in Union Dale.

I'll agree that this is one tough situation that you're in though. Scranton's your site of schooling and Binghamton's your workplace. Well, this is even mind-boggling for a local yokel like me! LOL! I think there's a rental community near Waverly called "Applewood Manor," but everything in the Abingtons (Clarks Summit/Waverly/Dalton) is probably going to be WAY out of your price range, as that's Scranton's version of Beverly Hills.

Best of luck to you though!

Actually, it's called Applewood Acres, and that'll probably be your best bet. It's on Fairview Road right alongside I-81. Use Exit 194 from Scranton (except at rush hour) and Exit 197 from Binghamton.

Montrose really is far off the beaten path, and you will tire of it quickly. There's really nothing there (and yes, I've been there many times).

I actually tried calling Applewood, but they had no idea if their apartments were smoke free or not. And unfortunately that won't work for me. Plus rent was pretty high. But thanks for the consideration

Well unless the house is less than $600 a month I wouldn't be interested
