Post Analyzing Lackawanna County's Census Statistics (1990, 2000, 2008)

As I sit here with an unabating cold I've decided to spend the evening delving into my old haunt, the U.S. Census Bureau's website, in order to crunch some numbers. As a demographics junkie I'm always fascinated to study population migration shifts, how the economic environment impacts median household incomes and poverty levels, changes in land development patterns, etc. As a budding urban planner (someday) we'd be using statistics just like these to forecast trends to determine how Congressional districts will be reapportioned someday, where to build new schools, where to build new roads, where to potentially slow down growth through legislation (i.e. urban growth boundaries or minimum lot sizes for developments), etc.

Without further adieu I am bringing to you the first installment of much more to come as well delve deeply into Lackawanna County's numbers. For tonight I will just be presenting population count data that I have organized, but in future installments expect to see median household incomes, median home values, poverty rates, educational attainment levels, etc. in a similar format---broken down first at the municipal level, and then by school district. The black numbers to the far right indicate the change in rank for that place from the prior count. I have put village center names inside parentheses where applicable to help people figure out what township is where.

interesting. Very interesting. I'm surprised Scranton has not had any real gains over the years. Is the college not helping at all? I know quite a few people who have went to school there. With the cheap housing prices you would think some of them would stick around. I guess theres just not the jobs around the area though
