Default The state cancelled my camping trip in December, any other options available?

I really need a break from work, so I booked a campsite at ricketts glen for the 3rd week in December. Just me my dog a tent a very warm sleeping bag and pad and some required supplies, nothing fancy. Anyway, I got a call from the state last week saying that due to budget cuts they are closing all or most (she wasnt sure) of the PA campsites from mid december through April.

I cant go any earlier than mid December and I cant take a week off after January due to my schedule. I really wanted to go when it was cold out, as I wont have to deal with seeing with any other people. I just want to chill out with no phone, no computer, no cell phone and not have to worry about anything but me, my dog, and nature. No families running around making noise, no other people with dogs who are not friendly, etc.

Anyway, it looks like Im out of options, does anyone have any other ideas of something close, cheap, where I wont be disturbed if I dont want to be?

Doesn't Luzerne or Wyoming counties have some parks you can check out? How about KOA?

Besides that, I am sure some nice NEPA property owner on this forum would be happy to let you camp on their land. Right?

If you don't need running water, check with a State FOREST District to see about a free permit for a drive-up campsite: Camping in PA's State Forests - PA DCNR

I stayed at this place a couple of years ago in the fall.

Good's Campground

It sounds ultra-modern and just the sort of place that you're not looking for, but it's really a great place. An older, very easy going, couple owns/runs it. They have property north and south of the highway and make a few bucks renting campsites. There's a small store with a few arcade games and a pool table. Another building serves as the diner. The guy opened the store so that we could purchase one item and cooked breakfast for us the next day. He stood and perused a newspaper, watched a 1940s movie while we ate.

I called ahead and the woman told me to just come out, scout around and pick my campsite when I arrived. I didn't realize that they owned the tract of land on the north side of the road as well. She found us in the woods and told us to go and look for the best sites on the other side of the road, tipped us off to the ones at the top of the dirt road. A word of warning, on the way to that great campsite you'll pass an abandoned trailer, a couple of seasonal use trailers (one looks more like a small mobile home).

We went at the end of September and there were no other campers. I didn't see any lights or hear any noise from anyone or anything in the area. I'd go there again.

This place is about a 1/2 mile west of the park on 118. There are others further west and south going toward Benton.

If you want to make the trip out to Western Pennsylvania to the Allegheny national forest I believe you can just walk into it and set up anywhere:

Allegheny National Forest- Recreational Activities

I believe most national forests have similar rules, research first.

We used to do a lot of camping like that but what we did was find a good spot on private land through various explorations and find out who owned it. Most were more than willing to let you camp there if you asked. Best spot we ever had was private.

Wow! I didn't know about that. There's a lot of forest land in the state; you could camp in any region.

Note that there's limits, all of Ricketts Glenn would be off limits.

When I was traveling out West there was lot of places that had staions set up where you could sign in. Didn't cost anything, I guess it was just so they knew where to start looking if anything happened. Same thing with a lot of paid campsites, they had a big pipe. You'd first go find the site you wanted, go back to the pipe, fill out the application and drop it in the pipe. Was usually like 5 bucks or around there.
